Johnny Cash is the fucking man. He's the only person on the face of the earth who could make country music even remotely resemble something respectable. Such a sad story, that mans life. His video for his cover of NIN's Hurt is the greatest music video i have ever seen. God bless that man.

I find all this rather odd as even just yesterday I remember seeing a preview for the upcoming season of 8 Simple Rules. Damn.

I heard that they had just finished filming the fourth episode of the season when he suddenly collapsed. I dont know if they will air those episodes or not.

I met Ritter in Baltimore several years ago when my brother was in a playwriting competition. He was a genuinely kind man, and every word I've heard of him is about what a decent all-around guy he was. I'm sorry he's gone--he was too young, and I feel terribly for his family. He died on his daughter's birthday, of all days.

As for Cash...the man will always be a legend. To be honest, he was one of the few figures in country music I could tolerate. Besides being blessed with that incredible voice, he was a gifted artist who pushed the boundaries of his music genre.

Both will be missed.

Both will be missed and I mourn them both but to me, I found Ritter's death to be more shocking than Cash's. I knew that J.C. would die soon but I didn't expect John Ritter to die so soon. It was much of a shock to me as when the radio announcers mentioning of Phil Hartman's murder.

I agree, Ritter's is more shocking. More sad, too, since he was young, and it is such a blow to his young family.

A brit on another forum posted this story about Cash:

"A Johnny Cash story.

I was at the Glastonbury festival he played, in the "oldie slot" on the main stage. He got a massive crowd- these were the days when anyone could jump the fence- it could have been 100,000 people. The warmth of the reception he got was brilliant. Everyone cheered, laughed at the funny songs and sang along with "Ring of fire".

His voice kept cracking up, though, and by the end of the concert he was struggling a bit. I assumed he had a sore throat or something. However a few days later I was listening to Andy Kershaw on the radio, and he'd accompanied Cash to the show.

It seems that Cash had no idea what Glastonbury was about. He'd been asleep on the drive to Pilton in a limo with blacked-out windows. He'd gone on stage expecting to play to maybe a few hundred old country fans. Instead he found himself looking at the biggest crowd he'd ever played to, and everyone was worshipping him.

Turns out the reason his voice was cracking was that he couldn't stop crying. Bye, Johnny. Missing you already. "

I feel the exact same way. When I first heard the new, I did a double take make sure I had heard the name correctly. We knew that Cashs health was declining, but with Ritter... that just came out of nowhere.

It would appear, most unfortunately, that such things come in threes. With Bob Hope, Johnny Cash, and John Ritter.
