Their pitiful postseason record against the Yankees is kinda lost in their overall pitiful postseason record of late. There's no team that can choke quite like the Braves.Darth Fanboy wrote:Well too bad the Braves are already out this year, The Yankees would love to stomp all over the Braves AGAIN, or do we not remember Atlanta's pitiful postseason record against the Yankees.

Oh, and Durandal, the Braves beat the Indians in the 96 series, their one and only World Series win.
*resumes waiting for the Cubs to LOSE in the NLCS* And may it be another 95 years before they win a playoff series again.
Because it might take that long for the Braves to win another series.

And now we're one step closer to a Cubs-Red Sox World Series, which will truly signal the end of the universe.

12 striaght division titles, 1 ring to show for it. If there was ever a better case for baseball realignment then I can't think of one. the Braves need to stop wasting a Valuable playoff spot so that a team that might actually show something for it can get in. Like Philadelphia this year, or houston, well maybe not Houston since theyve never won a postseason series but the Phillies! As much as I hate the Vet as a stadium I think stadiunms on their way out should get one last bit of glory before implosion.ZShade wrote: Their pitiful postseason record against the Yankees is kinda lost in their overall pitiful postseason record of late. Not sure how you would realign things to get rid of the Braves playoff spot since they do win a lot in the regular season and sell many tickets. This may be the end of the winning/losing streak though, since many of their players are free agents after the season concludes.Darth Fanboy wrote:12 striaght division titles, 1 ring to show for it. In other news, I was wrong. The Braves beat the Indians in '95. In '96, they lost to the Yankees.
Naturally.

Well, after a disappointing 9-8 loss in extra innings, the Cubbies come back the next day to pound the Marlins 12-3 in the Friendly Confines; with home runs belted out by Aramis Ramirez, Alex Gonzales (CHC) and Sammy Sosa.
Meanwhile, in New York, the BoSox hang on to win 5-3 over the Yanks in game one of their series.
Step one to the most improbable World Series matchup imaginable.

In fairness, it wouldn't have been improbable in, say, 1909 or something.Patrick Degan wrote:

The only way that the Red Sox are going to win the world series is by a meteorite hitting the tour bus carrying the opposing team to the game. It's a fact, anything Boston supports is doomed to failure. As Seth Meyers once said "If Boston routed for gravity, everyone would be floating three feet of the ground."

After the Cubs score the go-ahead run off a Randy Simon RBI triple in the top of the 11th inning, Game 3 of the NLCS ends in bizarre fashion as Marlin Derek Lee is caught between second and third for the tag-out to end the game with a 5-4 Cubs win before a sold-out crowd in Pro Player Stadium in Miami. Chicago are now at a 2-1 series lead and halfway to their first World Series since 1945. Matt Clement starts for the Cubs tomorrow in Game 4.
Meanwhile, the ALCS, tied at 1-1, shifts ground to Fenway Park and a meeting of Pedro Martinez v. Roger Clemens.

The ideal outcome would be a Cubs vs Yankees series in which the Yankes are defeated, resulting in a humilation that completely overwhelms the team and destroys their legacy for all time.

Well, the Cubs started the pounding early —a grand-slam home run blasted by Aramis Ramirez in the 1st followed up by three runs in the 2nd and 3rd innings gave Chicago starter Matt Clement an early 7-0 lead while sending Marlins rookie right-hander Dontrell Willis to the bench halfway through the top of the 2nd. The Marlins attempted to begin the climb back upward with two RBI runs in the 5th, but Aramis Ramirez came through with another home run shot to put the game permanently out of range. Cubs win 8-3 and take a firm 3-1 command of this series. Carlos Zambrano has the opportunity tomorrow to finish the Marlins and propel Chicago to its first World Series since 1945.

Of course, the actual situation will be the Yankees destroying Cubs in the World Series. And I agree that your outlined situation would be more desirable in my situation. I don't know why you think the Yankees will so totally rape the Cubs in the world series. IMO, the Braves had a much better year than the Yankees and they got beaten by the Cubs. Need I also mention that the Marlins beat the Giants, a FAR superior team?Durandal wrote:Of course, the actual situation will be the Yankees destroying Cubs in the World Series. Eh, let's be honest here. The Braves played in a weak division and couldn't get the job done in the postseason. The Yankees owned the Twins after Game 1 (which may or may not mean anything--I don't follow the AL too closely) and are looking like the better team against the Red Sox, who are hardly pushovers. Make no mistake about it: beating the Braves was big for the Cubs, but the Braves are in no way shape or form the New York Yankees. The Kernel wrote:I don't know why you think the Yankees will so totally rape the Cubs in the world series. Yeah, the Twins aren't exactly a stellar team (they were the second wild card team IIRC) so beating them wasn't exactly a huge victory. If anything, it was miraculous that the Twins won the first game at all.
I guess maybe I'm a little biased here. My grandmother has lived in Chicago all her life and is a HUGE Cubs fan so even seeing them go to the World Series would be huge for her. If they actually manage to WIN then she can die a happy lady (her words). So all I can say is: GO CUBS!!!!

There's only one wild card per league in baseball, and the Red Sox were it in the AL, so the Twins had to have won the AL Central. That says very poor things about the AL Central, but that's not really a powerhouse division right now.

Excuse me? But the NL East was not a Weak Divison this year. The Marlins and Braves took two playoff spots, the most that a divison can have. PHiladelphia played very well up until their last series with Florida and Montreal had a good season despite playing a chunk of their games in San Juan, they could have contended if it werent for their second half metldown. The only truly Inept team in the East was the Mets, By god they suck but not enough to drag down the other four. The Braves played in a weak division and couldn't get the job done in the postseason.
The Braves however did have one huge flaw, their record within their divison was not as good as Florida and possibly not even as good as Philadelphias. Id have to look that up again.
the problem with the Braves is that they just simply choke every year.

I have almost reached the regrettable conclusion that the Negro's great stumbling block in his stride toward freedom is not the White Citizen's Counciler or the Ku Klux Klanner, but the white moderate, who is more devoted to "order" than to justice; who constantly says: "I agree with you in the goal you seek, but I cannot agree with your methods of direct action"; who paternalistically believes he can set the timetable for another man's freedom; who lives by a mythical concept of time and who constantly advises the Negro to wait for a "more convenient season."
