I thought they only really had the name change for the special itself. How long did they go by Jefferson Starship?

Like for most of the 70s, IIRC.

This might be incorrect, but at one time later on, they might have just gone by "Starship", but I may be confusing them with another band.

The IMDB boards are insanely insane. I try not to care about what crazys there say. For any given movie, you'll have four people saying that it was offensive to God, two people saying that the movie's actors are hot, one person offering undecipherable philosophical 'insight,' three people asking inane questions which make you wonder whether or not they saw the movie, and five people per previously mentioned person making snide comments about the aforementioned posts.

Not to mention some people PRAISED the animation for that horrible Bakshi version of LOTR...Brrrrrrr!
