Since you have no history of bigoted remarks on this board, I will assume for now that the incredibly asinine and ignorant word substitution of "Mainland Chinese government" and "Asians" was simply a careless and absent-minded mistake rather than an indication of an underlying racist attitude that all Asians are a monolithic group. I certainly didn't mean it that way or any other way. I was just commenting about all the continents and made an incredibly naive remark without even thinking of being racist.
Something like on Africa they've this problems, on Asia those (and I said asiatic as those living on asiatic countries, not as those of that race).. Evidently, I was thinking of China, because they indeed are by far the most populated country in Asia and they have followed a policy that, if not implemented, would have resulted, IIRC, in another billion people by now.

If there is anything that will kill off the population, it will probably only be in the third world. Or, the population will stabilize, and a cure for AIDS will be found and made cheap. At the rate we're going, I'm betting on the extinction.

The BIGGEST obstacle to reducing population (which is ultimately necessary, in the long run) is that the economy is geared for growth. When it's not growing, or hell even if growth isn't as fast as it was, people start screaming that the economy's going down the gutter... SOMETHING is wrong there.

The global economy needs to shift into a "holding pattern", where resource consumption varies little over the course of time. Ideally, it'd shrink by quite a bit before going into this 'holding pattern'.

However, the harsh reality is that populations will continue to remain stable in first-world nations while rising in regions of low education.

It's interesting how being a first-worlder affects your decision to breed. I'm willing to bet that a lot of people have less kids if they have access to more stuff, ie., it's easy to not have a kid if you want a new SUV, computer, TV, big house, trips to Jamaica, etc. because of the cost of raising THAT kid in the same luxury you have.

Just want to know what you think of over-population and what is in store for the future. Just so you know I think that there is no problem. And that in the long run we will have a decreasing population.

I think that, while there's local overpopulation problems in certain areas of the world, overall we still haven't reached a true overpopulation problem. I mean, if we have the money to pay farmers not to utilize their wheat and corn fields to grow food, then there should be plenty of food for everyone, presuming we could distribute it.

As for population density... I'll have to dig for it, but I seem to recall a website that calculated how the average world population density is much less than that of a typical urban city, and that in fact many large cities with multistory apartment buildings have population densities similar to those of countries like India and China...

IT would also speed up the spread of HIV. Anal sex is interestingly the easiest way to spread it. Also most people don't realize you can get an STD via anal and don’t use protection. Course most of the people in question don’t anway.

Nowhere in my post did I say that we should be perfectly efficient in our resource extraction and consumption after the new economy had leveled off. I figure a good 10% surplus would be enough to allow for unforeseen occurrences, while allowing for the vast majority of people to live a comfortable (though not necessarily wealthy) lifestyle.

Plus, I think that a billion would be on the high side of the ideal global population... ideally, we want everyone to be able to live fairly comfortably, and I seriously doubt this planet can support more than a billion people in such a fashion for a long (as in many, many thousands of years) time. And you're talking a billion on Mars? Where are they all going to live? Show me some proof that we could ever make Mars suitable for humans to walk unprotected on the surface, and I *might* believe a billion on Mars eventually.

And finally, what happens when we get there? Do we continue to expand until we fill the whole solar system? I'm skeptical about interstellar travel ever being practical, and the further away you get from the Sun, the harder it is to support life.

While I think eventually we should set up at least one off-planet colony, at some point we MUST stop expanding, lest we kill ourselves through over-consumption.

Necessity is the mother of all invention. No we don't send a billion straight to mars, but to start sending people or asking people to go to mars and colonize it would be a start. To set up a society there you would need lots of skilled and unskilled workers. Mining, construction, and other such occupations would be almost imeadiatly started to support and build a place to live. Give people a new place to go, and some will go just for the fun, others for the adventure, so on and so on. The billion was just a random number off the top of my head and does not mean anything. The amount of people that mars could support would be dependent on how the colonization would work and how succesful they are.
There are a lot of plans to send men to mars, but politicans are hesitent to spend the money on them because there is no real reason to other than scientific at this point, but if we were ever determined to do it and send settlers there we could at some expense do it.
