Spanky, are you talking about motorcycles specifically, or American products in general?
Just anything with an engine in it or that's more complicated than an alarm clock or a refridgerator, roughly.

Also, may i point out to spanky that most Japanese motorized products (ie Honda, Toyota, Nissan) sold in North America are designed and built in North America.

European motor vehicles and Japanese electronics.

What I'm basically saying, though is that I'd be caught dead before using an American motorised vehicle, because I hate them.

Have you ever owned a German car? Granted, mechanically they are near flawless, but the Germans for some reason insist on using German electronics. baaaaaaad. As for the rest of Europe Volvos are ugly and Saabs are quirky and wierd. Jaguars are pure shit.... and don't even get me started on Peugots. I drive Japanese cars built domesticly.

MB electronics = t3h l3/\D The VP of the our company has an '01 (i think. first year of the new bodystyle) S430 he bought used. Pure crap. It spends more time at the dealership than on the road. It's quite common actually. The electrical systems are horrific. The new BMW's are even worse, especially the one with the iDrive system. I'm sorry, but if you pay $75,000 for a new car it better run damn flawless with only routine maintenence for at least 100,000 miles.

A lot of European cars are horribly over-complicated and prone to stupid glitches which soon add up and become quite costly. Take a look at any car magazine that does longterm testing of cars and you'll see that European cars have the highest maintenance costs by a good margin.

As for electronics, the Japanese were doing quite well until they contracted out and moved a lot of their manufacturing to other countries. The quality just ain't there anymore as their products have gone from being "durables" to "consumables". The higher end of their product lines are still mostly made in Japan and the quality is still pretty good there. However, they still don't make a CD player that'll come anywhere close to a Wadia.

Well, Japan still does well in video and monitors, but otherwise they aren't so hot, IMHO.

Sony's QA is particularly atrocious, even for broadcast equipment.

Bose and Bang & Olufsen are superb, also.

I'd also mention that Jaguar has got shit because Ford bought them. :P Saab and Volvo are still great and Volvo are actually nice cars to look at and not just extremely safe, beige coloured boxes like a typical American estate.

I would gladly take such European or Japanese products over any USA-made piece of shit any day.
Aren't a lot American products made in other countries anyway? Maybe..i am not sure anymore, but i rarely see anything that says made in America.

You'll rarely see many Western nations manufacture stuff that is fairly mass produced. It's either made in Taiwan, Thailand, China or S. Korea. Cheap labour means the manufacturing industries of the 1st world nations shrink while the grow elsewhere due to outsourcing.

Good show. Not a bike person myself, but I enjoy watching them design/build the things. I suppose that if they gave me that black widow bike I'd ride it ;)

Bose is great quality (for the mass production), you pay for the name as with most prestigious products like a Roller. B&O just look funny. Image

Jaguar was making shit long before Ford bought them. The diference is that now they make profitable shit. Volvo, and especially Saab tend to overengineer things, making them overly complex. Cup holders for example. American and Japanese cupholder: sturdy rubberized depression in center console that can hold up to a 1 litre bottle of water. Saab cupholder: flimsy, spring loaded plastic assembly with dozens of moving parts (yes, a cupholder with moving fucking parts.... only the Sweedes could think up that monstrosity) that gracefully swings open and blossoms like a flower and is able to hold a quarter litre cup if you're gentle. Until you break it when you actually decide to use it on a regular basis.

You're claiming the E-Type and XK8 were "shit"?

Not Volvo, that I can say. I know mates with parents who have had 80s era Volvos last with nary a single problem. My Dad had a 99 Saab which never needed anything done to it. It depends on the model I guess, but to call the Volvos and Saabs I've known overengineered is silly. They're bland if anything.

Who gives a shit about cup holders? I know that wasn't a top priority when my Dad bought his cars. Still, German engineering is the finest in the end here. Though the electronics thing is fairly accurate since the only problem we've ever had with our '95 Audi A4 was a leaky computer container. The cup holders work admirably. :P

"Right now we can tell you a report was filed by the family of a 12 year old boy yesterday afternoon alleging Mr. Michael Jackson of criminal activity. A search warrant has been filed and that search is currently taking place. Mr. Jackson has not been charged with any crime. We cannot specifically address the content of the police report as it is confidential information at the present time, however, we can confirm that Mr. Jackson forced the boy to listen to the Howard Stern show and watch the movie Private Parts over and over again."

a few things Admiral.

70's and 80's Volvos are indeed indestructable tanks. Newer ones that have all the fancy pants gizmos are more troublesome.

Saabs (according to Consumer Reports Magazine) have a poor reliablity record and need to be pampered.

Jaguars, while pretty and fun to drive, are about as dependable as North Korean electronics in an electrical storm.

Well I was referring to the older cars, ever since the big automobile mergers of the '90s things have changed around the globe. Jaguars are and always have been about fun since they're sports cars. The way Ford is making the company go now is amazingly odd given I don't see any Ferrari people carriers anywhere. Though I've been in an S-Class and found it nice, I'd prefer a Merc.
