This is the basic method Stalin ruled Russia with, the only difference was that the people were "fired" by a firing squad.Darth Wong wrote:I once got a manager to confess to me that certain people were being fired and then replaced not because they were doing a bad job, but because management thought the arbitrary firings would intimidate the other employees and make them work harder.
Nasty but gives some results.
Now do you (you stands for americans) see why many in Europe dislike unrestricted capitalism so much?
Getting hit on by my buddy's kid sister. Not because she's my friend's sister, but because she's jailbait and I already have a GF. I have a 15 year old trying to cuddle and kiss me among other things everytime I visit my buddy, and the only way to keep it from happening is to have my GF along. Damn horny girls!

OK, lets get this out in the open. I'm an atheistic, rational-logical, science loving person. But I have still seen my fair share of weird shit. I don't look to "the spiritual" for explanations though. A maths/physics lecturer I knew talked about the possibility of "ghosts" beings creatures that existed in dimensions beyond the third, that humans are incapable of perceiving, but whose effects on the world can still be seen. An interesting theory, but still it doesn't cut it for me (why would extra-dimensional beings get a kick out of fucking with peoples heads).Darth Wong wrote:If you want to see ghosts, you'll see ghosts. If you don't believe, you won't see ghosts. The funny thing is how believers think this means that non-believers are scaring the ghosts away, rather than adopting an objective, rational approach.
Anyhow. What you say about wanting and not wanting to see them is kind of true, but you make a few gross generalisations about those who do "see them".

How much of an effort is made to rationalize these events without resorting to the supernatural or extradimensional? Did you know that very low-frequency vibrations make your hair stand on end and give you the intense feeling that you're being watched? Odd air currents can make doors close? It just seems rather facile to conclude that if you're not sure what caused something, it must have been something which does not obey the laws of physics.weemadando wrote:OK, lets get this out in the open. Why? In your case, you don't see ghosts. You see something you can't explain easily, but you do not make the leap in logic from "can't explain" to "disembodied astral projection of dead person", so you aren't covered by any comment regarding people who "see ghosts".Anyhow. What you say about wanting and not wanting to see them is kind of true, but you make a few gross generalisations about those who do "see them".

One perfect example that many people can vouch for. In the residential college where I lived in 2000 and 2001 there was a block that was definately "haunted".
Footsteps up and down the hallways, the noises of doors opening and closing (and no, there were no people in the hall a the time). I'm hesitant to write this off as "mass-hysteria" or something like that, but the fact remains, I don't have a valid explanation for it, but I am unwilling to say "its the spirit of..."

Really a pity I wasn't there. I would have challenged some girl to pass the night there. They usually fall for this kind of thingsweemadando wrote:One perfect example that many people can vouch for. It's really a win win situation. I completely deny the possibility of ghosts existing. But if I were wrong it would indeed be reassuring, for I really want to believe in afterlife
And then there's the girl trembling in your arms..
I've done this once. There's a house rumoured to be haunted in my grandparents village. I challenged sweet _name_ to pass some hours there. We ended up camping there for a night with another girl and guy.
It was fun and the girls got really scared. I just laughed and held them.
Really good quality time. But I saw no ghost

About half that block were girls anyway.Colonel Olrik wrote: Really a pity I wasn't there. I would have challenged some girl to pass the night there. They usually fall for this kind of things
This was more of a "benign", "friendly" ghost... I use the terms that imply conscious thought hesitantly. It's really a win win situation. I completely deny the possibility of ghosts existing. But if I were wrong it would indeed be reassuring, for I really want to believe in afterlife :)

I'm surprised no one questioned my interest in 'haunted' houses as a way to get girls.
And I'll second what Olrik and Wee said about 'wierd shit'. I'm in the Mike Wong camp about what they are, but I've seen die-hard skeptics so immersed in darkness and moving shadows that their pre-programmed fears kick in and they start crying like babies. I'd like to meet one person who has NEVER been told by anyone that they even suspect there is an afterlife. Someone who has always been told that life is finite, and has never been exposed to other culture's myths about mortality. Then get that person in a haunted house and see what they do. That would be a social experiment on a grand scale.

I enjoy that experience. I like to consider myself of scientific mind and rational thought. Being so, I can feel the presence of fear creeping inside me when I'm all alone, in a dark night, on the top of a hill in the forest.Lagmonster wrote:Then get that person in a haunted house and see what they do. I know I'm perfectly secure (some foxes and wild boars are the most dangerous animals around) but still the genetics do their jobs. Evolution as taught us well in that regard. It's no good to be alone in the dark.
Our senses become more accurate to compensate for the lack of vision. The noise in the woods becomes more apparent. The wind blowing in the trees suddenly sounds menacing..
Misterious forms start appearing. Our brain wants company and begins forming human padrons in the surroundings. Suddenly ghosts are lurking..
and wild beasts are out there in the dark..
Abandon thought, feel the fear..

Ahh, the "mysterious sounds" kind of ghost. That is by far the most common type of "ghost sighting", and that one's easy to explain.weemadando wrote:One perfect example that many people can vouch for. Certain buildings tend to conduct sounds oddly. I've seen office buildings where, through a quirk of ductwork and structural members, you can occasionally hear distinct voices and sounds from remote parts of the building. With the right mood, and the right predisposition, you hear a ghost. But under fluorescent lights and without preconditioning to interpret the sound as a haunting, you simply say "that's weird", until you figure out where the sounds are really coming from.
The fact that it only happens in a particular area of the building is a dead giveaway; is it more reasonable to conclude that it has something to do with the construction of the building, or that there is an afterlife being who violates the laws of physics and transcends time and space but can't get through the front door?

Indeed, though the ductwork of my house you could clearly hear someone talking in the second floor bathroom in the basement, without needing to put your ear to a vent. However the AC can't be on.Darth Wong wrote:Ahh, the "mysterious sounds" kind of ghost. The general mood really does have a lot to do with it. You do get reports of ghosts in we'll lit modern buildings in daylight, but there quite rare.

Nothing, NOTHING out there can compare to knowing you have over sixty Angrey Marines out there who want your ass because it means they get to go home earily and get some sleep, What am I talking about? The US-Airforce Escape and Evasion Course final Grade, Trying spending three days in the wilds of North Cariolina with a pack of marines on your tail and the boogyman pails in comparsion(No I saddly never got a chance to go through that couse but I did get eighteen angrey marines in a after-hours paintball match )Our senses become more accurate to compensate for the lack of vision.
