Yeah, no one has really heard of Iced Earth. They're power metal, but not like any power metal you've ever heard. They're extremely fast and triplet-intensive. If you're interested in any of their music, everything is good besides "The Glorious Burden" their newest album. I like the patriotic theme, but it just really isnt Iced Earth.

Nice playlist.

I just found a Disincarnate CD for $10 the other day. James Murphy - Best. Guitar. Soloist. Ever. He did the solos for Obituarys 'Cause of Death' which is a classic. Anybody know if he's still around.
You might like this then. Now THAT's soloing.
Has anyone heard the new Slipknot? It kind of annoyed me, it sounds like they're pulling a Staind with all the ballads and crap.
It's better than Iowa by a mile, "Before I forget" is the best one on that album in my opinion.
Still...in every students path towards death metal, they must always walk through the doorway that is Slayer.
Well, slayer are more like the leaders of thrash metal, along with pantera, trend setting death metal would belong to Deicide, in my opinion.

EDIT: Thought I'd add this guitar solo video too. Compare it to the first one.

I don't think Deicide had that much influence upon the Death Metal genre. (certainly not as much as, say, Hellhammer or Possessed)

Whoa... "Turbo"? Isn't that considered one of the weakest link in the JP chain?
I liked it at the time - I was just a kid. My uncle was a big Sabbath-Priest-Ozzy-Van Halen fan. That was the only Judas Priest album I really listened to. I liked Ozzy and Van Halen more. I liked Sabbath but I didn't learn true respect for them until a few years later. And then, of course 'Reign in Blood' and 'Master of Puppets' changed my whole direction.

Here's a little Sabbath trivia (you probably already know it but...):
Their distorted guitar was supposedly an accident when Iommi tore a small hole in his amp. It, of course provided their heavy sound that we have all come to know and love. 8)

Really? I thought the godfathers of death metal were Possessed...

(Slayer, BTW, is Thrash Metal)
Slayer did come out with 'Show No Mercy' two years before Possessed came out with their first LP, 'Seven Churches'. Possessed did have a song that came out though, in '84 on Metal Blades, 'Metal Massacre' compilation called 'Swing of the Axe'.

Though Slayer was thrash metal, they most likely influenced bands like Sepultura (who I think started out as thrash metal as well), Sodom and Possessed. I don't think Slayer bordered death metal until 'Reign in Blood' in '86. You are right though, Possessed was the first death metal band but I honestly don't think they would've sounded like they did if it wasn't for Slayer.

Slipknot never struck me as worth attention. It certainly isn't even remotely sophisticated.
I used to think that until just 5 or 6 months ago. I had their first CD ever since it came out but never really listened to it until 6 months ago - ever since then, it's all I can listen to - that and 'Iowa'.

You know Peregrin, even without looking at your location, I can almost tell you're from Europe the way you talk about death metal. I think over here in the states, we have a fairly different outlook on death metal than most Europeans. I think Europeans have a more philosophical or poetic outlook on death metal whereas here in the states, I think we're more absent-minded about it. My favorites have always been from here in the states; Deicide, Morbid Angel and Cannibal Corpse though I do like alot of European death metal; Bolt Thrower (in particular - my favorite war music ever), Carcass, Entombed and Dismember. I used to be a Milwaukee Metalfest regular during the '90s.

I can understand your existentialist/nihilist theory concerning death metal and if you want to know the truth, the 'real' godfather of death metal, in that respect could be considered Nietzche.[/quote]

That's embarassing to watch. What's even more embarassing is that people are actually cheering.

Did you watch the first one? That's far better, shows what "true" as in stupidly extreme, soloing is.

I haven't heard all of Turbo but from what of it I've heard on various compilations, it seems like it's one of the worst of the Halford-era JP albums.

I do know that Death Metal evolved out of Thrash Metal... thanks for clearing it up.

It's not my theory, I picked it up after lurking on various metal forums.
