Some of the most important inventions in my mind ( no paticular order ):

1) accurate time pieces - essential for sea faring

2) air conditioning/refridgeration - allows for storage of food and development in otherwise unhospitable areas

3) antibiotics - sucks to die from a minor cut

4) writing

I still say running water has to be #1. You take it for granted, but human civilization as we know it does not exist without running water. Not to mention the disease problems.

I think sanitation is related to running water. Without proper sanitation there cant be cities over a certain size. ( okay who plays civ ? )

Many of the great inventions were ideas, such as fire to keep warm, sharp and heavy objects to kill animals for food, and animals as transportation.

Upon further thought, I have to admit that running water may just be the best invention ever, for without it there'd be no way to have sex in the shower.
