...uhm...I guess...uhm... :? ...why do you want to learn sci-fi then? That's basically what it's all about. War in the future.

I know....I just don;t care much for the tactics part of it. There' plenty of sci-fi enjoyable without war.

Read the following:

Rama Series, by Arthur C. Clarke

Childhood's End, by Arthur C. Clarke

Martian Chronicles, by Ray Bradbury

Brave New World, by Aldous Huxley

Dune, by Frank Herbert

Those are pretty good examples of "true" science fiction. If you want mainstream science fiction, you'll have to watch stuff like Star wars and star trek.

OR, you can buy and play some of the sci-fi oriented computer games out in the market. I don't think your roommates would object to you playing computer games.

Well, not entirely true, but I'd confidently say 80% of sci-fi is war in the future.

No.

Rama, Childhood's End, Martian Chronicles(Has war, but only as minor reference in the background), 2001 space oddyssey.

Most of the best sci-fi are not about war.

Edit that...I won't get *far* Besides, form what I can tell, most of the topics are power issues, not tactical or srategical issues.

He'll be all right if he sticks to non-military subjects, which do crop up on occasion. The SWvST forum is pretty much a lost cause if he's not into military stuff, but the PSW forum tends to contain a lot more "let's examine their civilization" type threads.

I have basically zero knowledge of military tactics and poor at physics, and I'd say I'm doing pretty fine here.

Verilon, all you'll need (I think) are:

1) Common sense
2) Can take in information and keep them

Common sense is the higher of the two, in my opinion. Whenever I debate I use very little mathematics, and mostly common sense and reasoning.

So you preemptively assumed that I would only go to SW/ST....anyways....there are two other forums that I would be interested in, obviously....

It depends on what kind of thread you get into. There are a huge number of arguments one can get into where "common sense" physics will just make you look like a complete idiot (some of the Trekkie stuff I've seen will just blow your mind). For example, the widespread belief that black holes produce "magic gravity" that irresistibly sucks in matter OUTSIDE its event horizon; Darkstar used it and mindlessly defended it during our debate, but he's not alone by any means; it is a very common misconception. Black holes are quite resistible outside their event horizons.

Hmmm....

If Verilon can't get the movies, watch the shows, or read the books, then I say a lot of internet surfing is called for. I think reading a few fanfics will help too.

Conquest by Mike Wong should help, has both ST and SW.

Off-topic: Did you guys know that I have a videotape of Star Wars Episode 2 ^_^

To tell you the truth, I have very little knowledge of tactics too, but at least I LIKE them and can make up my own. :P If I didn't like tactics and militaries in general, I don't think I would like Star Wars.

I don't find it interesting. I think people that love diplomacy usually couldn't care less about the military. Example: Politicians.
