Since I haven't read it and actually might, would it be a good idea, since I have seen the movie?
The HP movies change the order in which events happen, but the events are the same. The differences in LotR are mostly done for clarity and brevity. The HP changes seem to be done for pacing issues with the movie itself. You can try to determine whether either method is acceptable, both are acceptable, or neither.

Absoloutely. There are parts of the books missing, just in order to cut back on time. The first one is pretty much complete, except with some choice dialogue, but the second one is really shortened. In the third one, they are practically suggesting two movies, one comes out in November and the other in December/January... But WB wasn't too keen on that idea! But definetly read book 3 and 4 since the fourth book is 700 pages odd long, I doubt that they could make that into a movie.

The HP books are actually fairly good. They're light, but they do have a surprising depth to them. Let me put it this way: the HP books are the only mainstream works of fiction being written today that I think have any real chance of surviving for the next 50-75 years as real books, instead of as niche-markets. The first one is only good, but I have found the rest of them to be excellent children's stories. I would recommend movie-goers read the books, but I would not necessarily recommend readers to see the movies.

Master of Ossus I would like to add that these books have the ability to make literally thousands (if not hundreds of thousands) of kids to start reading again instead of watching the dumb tube. That alone makes me want to praise JK Rowling!

I saw HP last sunday(opening weekend) I thought it was fantastic(had it not been on film it would have gotten a standing ovation) Snape I think is my favorite character(he has the whole creepy mage persona that I like, and he can cast defensive/offensive spells at a seconds notice)

Not to mention Alan Rickman just plain kicks ass. I've seen him in a lot different roles and he's never done less than great in them.

I prefer Malfoy. Malfoy carries off the "aristocratic SOB who'd kill you as soon as look at you" look pretty well. But Snape is eeeevil and I like!

Hermione looks nice too...

The only reason I'm going to see HP 3 is because there is a different director at the helm.

I liked the way the kids have settled into their roles. Draco is more menacing, and arrogant, just as he should be, and his father is even moreso. The heroes have also come a long way, except I still think Radcliffe is playing Harry a bit too cocky in some instances.

Unfortunately, there were so many times during the film where I thought "Why did they do that?" or the opposite sentiment (why didn't they do X). Considering the talent Columbus had to work with there was at least one scene left out that would have gone a long way to improving the film IMO, the Valentine's Day celebration, and I think he should have done the dueling club scene almost exactly as it was done in the book.

I've read the books a few times over, can you tell? :D

Indeed he is. I remembered him from Dogma, actually. And yes, I liked the Snape character.

i liked it, but there was some glaring descrepancies to the book...

Malfoy was just well, plain old evil.

How is that a discrepency with the book? Right now in the books, he's pretty evil, too. I assume that he'll eventually turn out to be a reasonable guy, but that's not how he's being depicted in books 1-4.

That might be, but lots of books have had that effect in the past without being good literature. Just look at the now-forgotten Goosebumps series. They were terrible, but lots of kids really enjoyed them. The quality of the HP books is far higher than that of the Goosebumps series.

I just saw the movie for the third time today and I enjoyed it just as much as the first time I saw it. Lucius Malfoy (and Drako when he gets a bit older) are soooooooooooo yummy as bad guys, and Ron Weasley is just the cutest thing in the entire world with the faces he makes.

I know I've said this about 230598203498235 times, but please read the books and see the movies if you haven't yet! If you enjoy fantasy stories, this one is fantastic. I loved the books, loved the first movie, but this movie I adore so much that I think it alone has turned me into a bit of an HP freak (I want a Gryffindor scarf for Kristinmas!!).

Oh well. Hopefully y'all will be able to look past that and like me anyway....

I thought it was OK, but I pictured Lockhart as having a higher voice, and a tone that says that he thinks the sun shines out of his ass.
