Ballistc: Ecks vs Sever
Santa Clause 2
The Hot Chick
8 Crazy Nights
Master of Disguise

and many more! added as I think of them.

And Solaris was decent; better than Traffic, at least (god, Traffic was pretentious).
But of course!
I forgot to add all those to the poll.
All these bad movies are seriously addling my brain...

There's a Red Green movie?!? Kick ass. Must find it. I loved that show.

Has anyone here seen Solaris? I'm looking forward to seeing it. The book was awesome, and although I haven't seen it, the russian version is supposed to be one of the finest in SF film history. The director (whose name I forget) has been called the Kirosawa of Russia.
Red Green movie?
Man, I loved that show.
Does any one have any info on it?

Yup. Since Iowa was the biggest contributer of funds for PBS and the Red Green show, there was a one-day only showing of the movie at a local theater.

It had all the elements of a GOOD classical comedy. Subtle parodies, physical humor, plenty of corny puns, and just a tad of bad taste.

I've read the book and have seen the original Russian film. It's very, very good. The "liquid oxygen" scene is particularly creepy.
I remember the liquid oxygen scene from Abyss. Heh, I almost choked.
I've seen that fleurocarbon experiment performed live on a rat. Damn freaky and totally cool. Rat once its lungs got used to it was quite happy and stopped panicking. Then when removed, it coughed up the fluid and resumed normal breathing. Kinda creepy.
That actually worked?!? Amazing.

Hey, I saw the rat go in, breath for about a minute in a highly oxygenated environment. Then it came out. Seemed OK...

It was part of a touring science program. Rat probably died of shock backstage.

*edit* This was about 10 years ago so I can't remember the specifics of the experiment, like what was used, but I'm assuming that it was a similar system to that in the Abyss where a liquid is saturated with oxygen to the point where inhaling it into the lungs, though highly uncomfortable, will still allow for breathing on some level. I also make not of the fact that they used a rat. Not a person in the experiments. Maybe their confidence wasn't that high */edit*

Still, though. I remember thinking when I saw Abyss..."That'd never work!"

I would just like to mention that the rat survived. True it did later die, but it was not caused by its experiences in The Abyss. The liquid breathing fluid was real and the process shown is how it is really done. In fact, it was really done. It is proven technology.

In theory its sound. Another reason for experimenting on rats is that they lack the concious thought of humans when it comes to this. The human body would be automatically rejecting the fluid (gag and cough reflex), but the problem is that on both the concious and the subconcious level the human brain would be attempting to stop the fluid from reaching the lungs, possibly even leading to a pre-emptive state of shock.

With a rat and other "lower" creatures once the body makes its "autobreath" reflex (at about 1.5-3 minutes for humans) and takes in the fluid which begins passing oxygen to the lungs it will stop panicking.

There are several BIG problems with the system though...

1) Even in the big suit like in the Abyss the total breathable O2 content is still going to be less than in your standard "88" SCUBA tank.

2) Breathing fluid is SIGNIFICANTLY harder than breathing gas, hence why many drowning victims will often die on the beach because their body can not adequately circulate the fluid from the lungs via a cough reflex. This could cause problems as one may not be adequately circulating the fluid leading to "shallow water blackout syndrome" where the brain falls below workable levels of O2 without realising it.

3) As mentioned previously, the obvious psychological issues.

4) Big'un this, the Abyss used it as a plot device to gain access to deeper areas, that conventional diving could not take you too. Ummm... Problems still remain. The suit would have to use a SIGNIFICANT amount of power on heating in order to keep the fluid inside at a temperature that prevent the diver from dropping into hypothermia. Which would take far shorter times to come into effect because, hell your taking in this near freezing fluid and holding in your lungs.

5) It'll never be used in a practical manner because of all of these issues.

I have not yet seen the new Solaris. As for the old one, it was truly magnificent, although a bit too slow for my taste, just like Tarkovsky's other Sci-fi film, Stalker. Btw, Lem said that he didn't consider the movie an accurate representation of the book. I can't judge for myself, as, to my huge embarassment, I have not read the book, even though I read a lot of Lem's stuff. However, be advised that theStalker is nothing like the Roadside Picknic book either.

Have a very nice day.
