Yes, Turkey should be admitted into the European Union TODAY. The reason I think that is should be admitted today, as more time passes, the more fundementalist Muslims gains control of the government. This trend would probably be cut short if Turkey joined the European Union.

The Cyprus issue is a complex one that I will try and break down as quickly as possible;
  • Cyprus gains independence from the UK.
  • Constitutionally the President is Greek-Cypriot, the Vice President is Turkish-Cypriot.
  • The President of Cyprus, accuses the junta of plotting to assisinate him, they were an attempt is made on his life.
  • At the same time, the junta attempts to incite the Cypriot military to seize Cyprus.
  • Both attempts fail.
  • Turkey invades Cyprus, on a pretence of protecting the Turkish-Cypriot minority.
  • The junta is overthrown in Greece and parliament is re-established.
  • Greece sends troops into Cyprus to stop Turkish advance.
  • Lines are drawn and have remained in effect since 1974.
  • Everyone from the UN down acknowledges the occupation as illegal.
  • 1980's Turkey recognises the Northen Turkish Republic of Cyprus, UN doesn't.
  • Diplomats from both Greece and Cyprus try and open dialogue through the UN for the unification of the island.
  • Cyprus begins negotiations to join the EU, the EU agrees and states that unification of the island is not a hurdle for membership.
  • A few months ago, EU announces Cyprus as one of the ten candidates states for EU entry in 2004, Turkey threatens to annex the occupied part of the island.
  • Secratary General Kofi Annan, presents both sides a proposal for unification, based on the Swiss federal system.
