Nope, I've been replying to E-mail alerts of threads I've been in or have marked to be watched. Hadn't seen the OT front page until about 5 minutes after I posted in here.

why does it take forever to switch between here and Space battles?

if someone links me a thread in space battles, and I'm here it takes 2-4 minutes to load up space battles and then another 2 min. just to get out of space battles?

no other board has that problem just a conflict between the two...

Does it take that long if you go only to SB? Have you asked the admins there if there are server-side problems just now?

Looks like we had another DOS attack of some sort. The number of lurkers spiked up to several hundred over a period of a few minutes. I managed to head it off with an .htaccess rewriterule, and I'm going to see if I can restore the "max number of users online" record from before this happened.

Any idea who was responsible? I have my suspcions after recent events, but you never know considering some of the idiots we've had to deal with.

Nope. No idea, and to be honest, it might not even have been any particular individual. It could have been a worm of some sort.

BTW, there was another outage this evening because the utility guys were monkeying around with the power lines again. This is really getting annoying; I don't know why the hell they keep going up there with the cherry-picker but it's wearing on my patience.

Nope. And the server is not located at my house; it's at a building up the street. But the utility guys have been monkeying with the power lines in front of the building at night recently. I'm not even sure what they're doing; I considered going out and asking them but it was raining cats and dogs.

Mike, the search archive hasn't been updated for several days...did you forget to reengage the board backup or is it a wider gap between updates?

Read a few pages back, Wong turned off search for the main board, search for the backup board is still on.

I only update once a week now. The transfer file is roughly 500 MB, so it's not something I can transfer every night any more. I copy it onto a different on-site machine daily for backup, but I don't copy it to my home server every night any more. The bandwidth from the backup transfers alone would be 15 GB per month.

DW, you might be interested to know that Something Awful's board admin is instituting a policy forbidding super-huge threads, as it was determined that they were placing an inordinate strain on their servers whenever people were browsing and posting through them.

They were saying that threads over 800 posts were pretty damn big and implied that that would be about the cutoff point when they got around to instituting the policy, although SA has seen many multi-thousand post threads in it's history, and currently has a >17000 post thread on Half-Life 2 going right now, as well as a few other multi-thousand post megathreads active at the moment.

I'm aware of that problem; it can be rectified through some reprogramming because there are some inefficient SQL queries in the way it handles long threads. But our threads generally don't get that big, so it's not a problem.

PS. There was another Internet connection problem this morning, which is why there was a momentary lapse of connectivity around 11am EST. There have been a lot of intermittent problems ever since the building's wiring was worked on a few weeks ago; this is really annoying but hopefully they will sort out the problems soon.

Question: Lindar shows up in the 'Users Online' list of the Forum list page, yet she used Guest accounts to post, insists she's not logged on, and indeed announced her prolonged absence a while ago.
Is this just the board being quirky, the mods playing with us, or what?
