The Gilmore is a surprisingly easy amp to build, it just has more parts and takes longer to assemble than a cmoy. If you don't have to build the ultra-regulated power supply for it it's actually simpler than a META 42. I was able to scrounge some PSU's from my local surplus stores so I didn't have to build the Gilmore power supply. I'm giving up a bit of sound quality but I'm not going to notice anything until I get a better CD/DVD-A or SACD player. That'll be taken care of this summer once I start working full time and get my concert tickets payed off.phongn wrote:I'd probably have trouble making a cmoy, much less one of those superamps.
Saving up for one of Jan Meier's toys?
Rotel amps are surprisingly good. I got to hear a set of Rotel integrated amps at the local hifi shop some years ago and was quite amazed. They completely destroy your standard Sony or Yamaha "hifi" reciever amps and they could actually drive a set of Thiel speakers without crapping out. Thiels have funky impedance curves which play havoc with lesser amps.Yes, my wallet trembles in fear. I didn't get any headphones though, but my sound system consists of mostly used parts off of eBay. A Rotel RB-951 50W/ch amplifier, a NAD 1240 Preamp and a pair of Axiom M3ti bookshelf speakers. It sounds very, very nice.
Unfortunately my room has horrible acoustics (it's a friggen cube and echoey) and no place to put speakers which is why I went with headphones.
