The Original Super Mario, Mario III, Perfect Dark, TIE Fighter, X-Com: Apocalypse, Rainbow 6, Civilization, Civilization II, Alpha Centauri, Half-Life, FFVII, Baldur's Gate II, and Goldeneye were probably among the best games ever.

Half-Life, IMO, did the most for me in the SP game. I was just blown away by those aliens and then the Marines...(smiles as he remembers the first time he got his ass handed to him by the grunt AIs). There still isn't any AI I've seen that can compete with the HL marines. Except maybe the female assassins. Not to mention all of the other mods it spawned for MP, (Counter-Strike...w00t!) making it best game of all time.

Gosh, I can't remember the name of this game... it was on the Genesis... you played a ninja (or was it a samarui) trying to find a princess. You would run and jump through a forest before getting to a building, all very medieval Asian-ish. I loved that game.
My personal favorites are Homeworld, the Freespace series, and HALO (which has AI that blows away that of Half-Life. The bad guys dive away from grenades, and freaking sneak up behind you while you're distracted with some of their friends!)

There will never be a resolution in the evolution vs creationism debate because neither side can conclusively prove that they are right. The creationists can't prove that they're right becuase they're not, and the evolutionists can't prove that they're right because the creationists are too damn stupid to listen.

I've always enjoyed the Aliens vs Predator series for PC, a great couple of games, especially when playing the Alien or the Predator (I'm lethal with them. )
Here's one no one mentioned: Unreal. Another excellent game.
Also:
The Homeworld series (Anyone hear HW 2 is finally coming out?)
The Freespace Series
Clive Barker's Undying
Klingon Academy
Emperor: Battle for Dune
War of the Worlds
Anyone remember the Ecco: the Dolphin game for Genesis? That was an awesome game.
PS2:
The Thing
Devil May Cry
Silent Hill 2
WWF Smackdown 3

Probably the absolute best game I've ever played was Deus Ex, which kicked Half-Life off that throne. HL's still excellent, though.
Over the years there are a few games that stuck out in my mind as being special. Before HL arrived my all-time favorite was a dead heat between Tie Fighter and Doom II. Before that it was Syndicate, which was nasty, completely amoral and fun. Earlier than that, it was Civilization.
M1 Tank Platoon on the Amiga must rate up there somewhere; for some reason I enjoyed a hell of a lot more than I did with the sequel. It also had what was probably the best instruction manual of any game in history.

Since my previous mention of this game became a victim of threadicide (and on that note, I should change my title to LagMonster, Destroyer of Threads), I'll stick it out there again: SOLDAT!! Best of a growing crop of amazing freeware games you can play with your buds. ...Soldat is good...I must pimp Soldat...you will all become Soldat zombies...

Let me guess -- you're a Wing Commander fan (a shot in the dark here...)
I played the original WC on a 386 in 1992. Kicked fourth-point of contact, that game did. I actually liked the movie, although it really wasn't in-line with the games as much as I would have liked.
HW2 keeps getting pushed back. I am not sure they are still going to make it. Check out www.relicnews.com for updates.

Those SOBs better make it. I don't want another Obi-Wan scenario. Bastards.

Hmmm,
Empire Strikes Back for Nintendo was pretty kick ass.
Tecmo Super Bowl was insanely fun.
Whoever said Imperialism was right on...I start playing that thing, telling myself I'll only play for half an hour, and before I know it it's three hours later.
Battleground: Antietam - the graphics for the game were kick ass, there were a ton of differnet scenarios you could play, and the game play was pretty solid. I could definitely feel the intensity of trying to command a Civil War battle if fog of war was on. Nothing freaked me out quite like moving my regiments into position, and the next turn seeing a whole damned enemy division smack dab on my flank. Pretty cool...
Goldeneye - all time classic.
Conker's Bad Fur Day - This game is just sick and wrong. But it's really cool chopping off a squirrel's head with a Katana...
Bushido Blade 2 - Quick, dirty, and violent. The graphics are cheesy, but the gameplay rocks. One hit kills are hella cool.
The Grand Theft Auto series - I first started playing it back in it's early days, and always had a good time. GTA3 absolutely rocks, and I have a feeling that GTA Vice City will be even more kick ass when it comes out.
