How?
Referring to my Jesus idea, I meant that I could get up there in robes and sandals. (Which I have handy.) I could say that it's just a coincidence to screw with people.
Hey, say you gave up your normal clothing for Lent.

Or your trying to start up a cult. You're going to call it Mystianity.

It'd be better to dress like a ninja, and if anyone complains insist that ninjas were in the Bible, but relegated only to the Apocrypha. :)

;) Ninjas are in the part of the Apocrypha that deals with the Papacy.

YES!!! THE PAPAL T-SHIRT NINJAS FOR CHRIST!!!11

Sorry.
Anyway, yeah, the guy was trolling, and deserved any comments or nasty looks he got. But assault is something entirely different. I mean, 64 ounces of cola? Guy was probably sticky for the next five showers. That's what Wong's talking about with the double standard. And you're supposed to have your cell phones off damnit. If you forget, and have to scramble to turn it off, well, that's annoying but forgivable. If you start talking though, that deserves a comment. But not a drink in the pants.

I do believe I'm going to the movies soon anyway, though I can't remember what it was I was going to go see. I think perhaps I'll find a pin with a universal 'no' sign covering over a cross, and stand around next to the Passion lines before going into my movie. I think that's reasonable, don't you?

I missed that part too, but this guy is truly an ass. Class clown type, but he's meaner than the average class clown. Sort of like the Evil Clown. I still wouldn't pour a drink on him, but if I know him he didn't stop at wearing the costume.

That's asking for massive annoyance as people try to use the film to convert you at best, or an invitation for a lynching at worst depending on where you live. I know for a fact that the With One Accord ministry is based in Iowa, and their boss man writes essays for Jack Chick's website. Think about that.

Man, I wish I had a friend that looked like Jesus. I've got some great glow in the dark makeup he can smear on so he can be holy as he watched the movie...

Ok, so if it's bad to dress up as Jesus or Satan, why not dress up as a Roman centurion? The sword should help keep the fundies at bay for a while.

That'd work. Actually, I might head down to the SCA, break out the appropriate gear, and do that.

There was nothing in the local paper about this incident.

It might have been mentioned on one of the local TV stations, but I didn't see anything about it on TV either.

As far as what he did, he said that he wanted a reaction.
He also wanted to prove “that Christians aren’t as forgiving as they portray”.
He certainly got one. Having a 75 year old woman pour a soft drink over your head must be a little humiliating. :P

Interestingly enough, I wonder if what he did would fall under the 'fighting words' doctrine.

I don't know what (if anything) he said to the people in the audience, but his comment on wanting to prove “that Christians aren’t as forgiving as they portray” could certainly be taken as intent to incite an incident.

IMHO, if the police are investigating the incident, they're probably doing so with an eye towards charging Mr. Wendell, not the 75 year old woman who dumped a coke on him.

This is a very conservative area.

As one author put it:
Welcome to Indiana, where 'Hoosier Democrats' act like Republicans, and real Democrats are suspect.
"You say that it is your custom to burn widows. Very well. We also have a custom: when men burn a woman alive, we tie a rope around their necks and we hang them. Build your funeral pyre; beside it, my carpenters will build a gallows. You may follow your custom. And then we will follow ours."- General Sir Charles Napier

The response isn't necessarily hypocrisy. This could be likened to the "righteous anger" that is repeatedly demonstrated and condoned. Like Moses with the idol worshipers... and Jesus with the money-changers.

Well, you could subjecct theatres showing "The Passion" to some good ol'-fashioned arson, but I don't think that would be legal...

i should get five or six other people to dress up as ninjas, complete with masks and plastic weapons and go to the Passion at once. not do anything disruptive, just sit in the same row right in the front. and glower at anyone that gives us dirty looks.

Despite that he probably did it as a gag, how is it much different than dressing up as Darth Vader when going to see a Star Wars film?

Just because some people believe that it's true?

damnit. now i've got an idea of creating something like say. . ."The Jesus Christ Picture Show". we'll get the audience to dress in costume and re-enact scenes in the movie. and it'll be a musical, like the rocky horror picture show!

What would be good, is to get one of your friends to go to the movie with you, and you get him to dress up as Jesus and you dress up as the devil(or visa-versa).

I would go watch this movie dressed as a flamboyantly Satanist Goth... But I won't for three reasons:

1. I'm a cheap bastard.
2. I value my life.
3. I really, really REALLY don't want to see that movie.

while someone who is actively doing something obnoxious can actually PRESS CHARGES over similar actions.
I do not really think that the kid did anything wrong, but then you would have to say that about anyone whom you found to be "offensive" in some way. Where do you draw the line at what people consider offensive?

The peopel had no right to throw anything at him. The candy could have hit his eye. He could have been seriously injured by flying drink. That's just wrong. He didn't assault or batter anyone.

I might think it is offensive when people dress up as halloween costumes. It doesn't mean I go out and beat the shit out of them.

Wouldn't attacking him because he was dressed as the devil be a violation of the constitutional rights of freedom of religion? Satanism is a religion isn't it? I don't know.

No, he "only" went out with the express intention of causing a public disturbance. Trying to anger people and ruin their moviegoing experience. BY HIS OWN WORDS, he was trolling for a reaction. He wasn't there to enjoy the movie, just to bother people.

Throwing a glass of pop on him was over the top, though.
I might think it is offensive when people dress up as halloween costumes. It doesn't mean I go out and beat the shit out of them.
You're seriously equating throwing candy at the guy with beating the shit out of him? How weak is your constitution, anyway?
