But then Watterson tosses in stories like the one where Hobbes was slicing up Calvin's mom's magazines and putting the letters in Calvin's mailbox. Calvin genuinely thought they were from someone else until his mom noticed that her magazines were being cut up. Then he got pissed off and confronted Hobbes about it.

So, if it's simply two interpretations of reality, then what's going on? Was Calivn cutting up his mom's magazines and then erasing his own memory?
If you were a cinema major, you would already know the correct answer. ;)

Scarface? I thought he was called Two-Face?
I don't know if he ever appeared in the comic, but there was a villain made up of a ventriloquist and a puppet. The puppet, Scarface, was merely one of the ventriloquist's split personalities.

scarface has made several appearances in recent batman comics, actually.

And the Duplicator line (From "Scientific Progress goes Boink"), where he laments not having all the "fun" of what his clones are doing, though he gets punished. That and the first strips, where Hobbes seemingly comes out of nowhere in that trap, and his parents don't pay much attention to his new "stuffed" tiger. Personally, I think it is fairly vauge.

And Spanky, just what in the hell is that *myan* thing you keep doing? :?

See my avatar thread in the Testing Forum.

Maybe the answer is vague, but I personally perfectly understand what's going on and why.

They're both part of the imagination of the cartoonist. Therefore, they're both equally real, even if one's a stuffed toy. And other clever stuff.

I already freaking have. It just seems that you guys need more than what's required to understand the concept. I personally find it extremely difficult to explain things that are nearly second nature to me.

Kuja, what Spanky is trying to say (although he isn't trying very hard ;)) is that Calvin's reality is defined by how HE sees it. Trying to explain the actual causes of certain events is irrelevent because his reality is not based on your conceptions of his reality, nor are they based on his parents reality.

A few things, if I may:

1. Deranged, mutant, killer, monster snow goons.

2. Hamster Huey and the Gooey Kablooie

3. Alexander Corriander and the Salamander Bellylander

4. The "noodle incident" and the "spaghetti incident" are never explained.

5. You never find out what Calvin's parents are.

As to whether or not he's magical, there seems to be a lot of stuff done without Calvin being around. I'd say #2, but maybe he's magic.

First, thanks, Kernel. :)

Now then for CapChew:

There was no "spaghetti incident," just the noodle one.

What do you mean by "what his parents are," exactly? :|

Watterson has explicitly made it clear that Hobbes is NOT magical. Have you been paying attention, or sleeping in class? :P

The Discworld explanation would be that kids always see "what is there" while normal adults have mental blocks and they can't see stuff like bogeymen, evil bears that eat you if you step on the lines in the sidewalk, and other weird stuff. ;)

Actually, one of my former classmates looked very vaguely like what Calvin's mom might have resembled as a teenager.

Huh?
The first strip clearly shows something differnt.

IIRC, the third strip shows Calvin father picking up the tiger and handing it over to Calvin. But I see what Phongn means now, so I concede.

Yeah, but they were so funny. Frankly, whenever someone says comics aren't an artform, I just look over at a Tracer Bullet comic.

Calvin's parents are purposely never named. They were meant to represent the everymomanddad. The only defining characteristic I can think of is that Calvin's dad is a patent lawyer.
