I like Black hawk Down. I wonder if the reactions of the actors in the movies really happened.
IIRC the whole fiasco was caused by bad intel and cockups high in the chain of command.
Have you ever written something that made a person cry?

Word of warning, though: the first half of "We Were Soldiers" is pretty bad. You have to just wait it out to get to the good part of the movie, where they show you the battle of La Drang. The first half of the movie depicts Hal Moore in all his Roman Catholic family-values purity, and I honestly swear it comes off as a Catholic recruitment film. And the movie is pretty ham-fisted with the way it tries to grab at your heart-strings with long sequences showing the soldiers' wives reacting to the death letters. But the battle itself is beautifully done; you just have to tolerate the other parts.
BHD is better in that respect: Ridley Scott just wants to show you how it all went down, with no fluff.

I read a book called "Crusade" by Rick Atkinson. Its pretty interesting reading. The book is about the Gulf War. There is a part where they describe an Army soldier, named Cooper, being wounded in neck by a mortar fragment. He was hit while trying to shield a fellow soldier who was already wounded.
Not long after the mortar fragment he was hit by shrapnel from an exploding TOW box on a M-2. It severed an artery and he died later that night.
That little description bugged me a great deal and brought a tear to my eye. Why did that young man have to loose his live before he even had a chance to live it?
Also, the description of the CO of the USS Princeton weeping alone in his cabin after his ship was out of danger. ( The Princeton struck and Iraqi mine and had to be towed back to base) That evoked an emotional response too.

I've heard the story of this soldier called Lozada, who covered a Green Beret retreat. He held off an attacking NVA battalion by himself with just one M60, and eventually got seriously wounded at least twice. In the end he was being attacked from 3 sides at once, but he managed to ddelay them long enough for the wounded to escape.
