If you had (probably) 1 month to live, what would you do?

I'd certainly explain it to Emily. Life insurance is a number one on the to-do list, and then taking the last two weeks as leave from work(that's all I have accumulated at this very moment). This would be time with the family; I'd like to explain to my children that I wouldn't be with them for much longer, but in Charlotte(3yo)'s case, it would be difficult, and Ethan(2mo)'s case impossible, so I guess one of the things I'd do would be to take a day to record videos, one per birthday for each of them until the age of 18.

Yes, but I also wouldn't want to have our last days together marred by this sort of thing hanging over us. I see it more to spare her feelings, but who knows, maybe if I were truly faced with such a hypothetical situation I would feel differently. Especially if it was certain I would die, and not that "I might possibly but there's a chance I might not" die in a month's time.

I'm not sure I'd want to tell her that, "Honey, I've got some horrible news. In 30 days I'll probably be dead, but there's a smaller chance I'll be perfectly fine!"

I don't know. I have to give it more thought.

What do you think cancer patients have to do?

 you are still ignoring the question of whether she has a right to know. You're approaching it entirely from the standpoint of what YOU want, what will make YOU happy, etc.

I guess I would tell her as the day drew closer. I don't know, perhaps with a week or so to go.

It's not so much my happiness, it's about not wanting to upset her during a time I've planned for us to enjoy. I don't know what's worse, her having to deal with it 30 days beforehand, or a week.

I'm sorry if this isn't a more satisfactory answer, it's just hard for me to make such a decision about how, or more precisely, exactly when to break the news that I am more likely than not faced with oblivion in 30 days. Of course she has a right to know, to tell her. Maybe it would be better to do so right away, but I imagine I'd also need some time to merely deal with it myself.

Perhaps if it were real, I might think differently. It's hard to answer otherwise. It was easier coming up with ideas about what I'd want to do during this time than to know how or when to tell friends and loved ones about this horrible situation.
