There may be hope yet, at my school I will hold the door for people, and I'll...occasionally...get a thank you . Lucky however, for the woman, I have yet to meet a feminazi, and pity upon her should I ever get face to face with one.weemadando wrote:I hear you on that. I recently copped a mouthful from who I'm assuming was a feminazi for holding the door open for her. Apparently I was perpuating gender stereotypes.Vertigo1 wrote: Poe: Just so you know, you're not alone. I've been known to open doors for anyone behind me. The world I come from, its called being a gentleman...but here its called being a doormat. Very few people actually appreciate people that do that for them anymore.

How common is that? I always hold doors open for people if they're following me in or out of a building, and I never catch trouble for it.weemadando wrote:I hear you on that. It's very uncommon, which of course makes it shocking as hell when somebody does it.Darth Wong wrote:How common is that? What's uncommon? Holding doors open, or receiving flak for it??Iceberg wrote:It's very uncommon, which of course makes it shocking as hell when somebody does it.Darth Wong wrote:How common is that? At Villanova, it was a huge faux pas to let a door close in the face of the person behind you. Holding the door for the person behind you was expectd behavior; I and just about everyone else got pissed when someone wouldn't do it.
Then I'd come home on break to New Jersey, a state where you could be on fire and they wouldn't take thirty seconds to piss on your leg, and spend days getting used to doors closing in my face.
As for cell phones, I handle that problem by leaving mine off unless I need to make a call. Call me old fashioned, but I despise the very idea of people being able to contact me any time they please. I've got an answering machine. If there's something that important you need to tell me, I'll call you back eventually.

Any city gets what it admires, will pay for, and, ultimately, deserves…We want and deserve tin-can architecture in a tinhorn culture. And we will probably be judged not by the monuments we build but by those we have destroyed.--Ada Louise Huxtable, "Farewell to Penn Station", New York Times editorial, 30 October 1963

the hat thing hasn't happened to me, and I'm a Texan(guess I'm lucky)
My parents showed me PG-13 and R rated movies at home when I was a kid, I used to watch Terminator 2, the Die Hard Trilogy I really enjoyed, Independence Day, and I thought it was just plain cool fun.
My parents made sure I was quiet, and the only time I talked was when my parents took me and a friend to see Twister(fearing we would be afraid, they told us to realize it was just a movie, and that nothing really bad actually happened), but our only words were, "Cooooool" as the cow flew across the screen.
I also watched the Indiana Jones movies a lot and the Star Wars and Trek movies a lot(we had all the old trek movies).
So, I was always quiet at movies.
I try and open doors for people, we kinda compete where I live, and open the door for the other person by getting their first and opening the door for them.
"You first"
"No, after you"
"No, go ahead"
"nah, you go"
Until one of us gives in and goes. I'm weird, aren't I?

Thats the way it usually is where I live, but hey, I guess feminazism transcends all boundaries.FaxModem1 wrote: I try and open doors for people, we kinda compete where I live, and open the door for the other person by getting their first and opening the door for them.
