No Garrison requested light armor...also known as M113 APCs and M2/3 IFVs. He didn't want or ask for tanks but he did request light armor support as well as a whoel HELL of a lot more overhead air assests (like the Spectres) but all were deinied for political and "cost effectivness" reasons
Do you have a source on this? The book by Bowden states he did not request armor but that the CO of 10th Mountain did. I dont agree with not letting them get M-113, Bradleys, or even M-1's. ( The Marine M-1's in Somalia were left the fuck alone by the sammis ) I can see why they would not want a Spectre floating around.

The problem with this whole op, was once we went over to feeding the Somali's to hunting Warlords, the Somali's perception of us changed for the worse.
numbers with a mission that went bad.

The Rangers engaged in a perfect example of how NOT to fight in an urban environment. Do you know what a city street is? Its a CANYON. Were this a battle where the Rangers were moving through a canyon with the enemy controlling the heights they would have been utterly berated for their foolishness in not securing the high ground and using it to increase their effectivness AND speed. Nonetheless they failed to recognize the neccessarry tactical objective of securing the high ground both to gaurd the troops on location AND to hold off the militants. The Ranger's movements to and around the chopper were a classic example of what NOT to do in MOUT situations.
Point conceeded.

One thing that bothers me about Mogadishu, and any other op today, is why didnt they have gun shields for .50 cal mounts on the Hummers? Ive seen plenty of gun shields in use on M-113's in Vietnam footage and I dont think they are so heavy to preclude their use on a Hummer. Anyone got an idea?

My only source is what I got from my Senior DI because he was part of the MEU that came in to help extricate the Army a couple of months later so admittedly it ain't the best.

I'm not positive but I believe most of the gun shields (such as those on the M-113) require some hydraulics to get any decent kind of performance and the Hummer just doesn't have enough space to spare for some hydraulics and power systems.

The shields are very ehavy and make swinging the thing around troublesome, as well as impeding your visibility.
