How NOT to overclock your comp...

(Thank God this one wasn't done by me!
)
Picked this little freak of nature up from the local store which uses me as their disposal service for "dead" parts... When I went in today, I noticed this in my box:
Now, obviously my first thought was "What the fuck?!" The guy behind the counter immidiately told me that it had been pulled for intermittant failure from a customer's computer, but it still posts, just does really odd stuff after load. That's when he also told me it had been OC'd and he'd put it in simply because he thought I'd have fun with it... I think he was right...
Here's the other WTF stuff about this thing: (test board: ASUS P2B-VE, HP OEM)
*Please note the processor name/title!*
Here's what this mutant looks like when installed:
Dispite the fact I can use those fans, I'm gonna keep this mutated freak of nature intact, and at the next LANparty when my #2 machine starts being made fun of, I'm gonna pull this thing out and just tell'em "At least I don't rig my stuff like THIS!"

I could be wrong, but here's my guess. That is one of the early Pentium II chips, except that someone has taken it out of its cartridge and mounted the fans directly on top of the CPU and cache memory chips for better cooling (so he thought). Using a copper plate instead of a proper heatsink actually makes things worse. Apparently whoever made the BIOS firmware has a nice sense of humour for when the BIOS doesn't recognize the CPU.

Now, I'm no comp wiz, but I think I can answer this question.
For a fan to adequetly cool down the system, it would need to be installed on the case itself, with both ingoing and outgoing fans.
But since the fans in the picture are atached to the board itself, it's going to do jackshit.
*shrugs* I could be wrong.

Look at your processor....there should be a heatsink and a fan on it.....the case fans help....so too do directly mounted proc. fans.....

Don't mind me....
I'm just an idiot that forgot something simple.....

It is actually a pIII 550.
As for the bios issue, that's what the chip registers as in anything. I'm thinking it was either messed with in some way, or it was something intel itself mutated.

Reminds me of a guy who tried to convert his PC to water cooling.
Moron removed fans, epoxied the whole thing and poured water in there.
Guess what happened when he turned it on...
At least none told him about LIQUID NITROGEN COOLING!

Actually that was a hoax, but a damn funny one for about two days.
The guy owned up to it later saying he was just happy to get his 15mins of Net fame. Hell , even FARK linked to the BBS where he posted it.
