7 min 15 sec

Synopsis: When his overtures of peace to the forces of Nippon
are spurned, Popeye takes on the Imperial Japanese Navy in
this jingoistic wartime-propaganda cartoon. Now banned,
not surprisingly, since it's not exactly politically correct.
Funny though!

Just a note

They are running crummy active-x controls on that site.

Be careful

For somewhat safer use of IE6 donwnload IE-SPYAD

http://www.staff.uiuc.edu/~ehowes/resource.htm

It's a registry file that puts sites known to run unsafe active x crontols into the restricted zones.

Interesting how at the time they sorta mix Chinese and Japanese elements together as if they are the same.

I did not really think this one was funny but not because it is un pc. It just didnt strike me as funny is all.

Have you seen the bugs bunny one where he escapes a black "elmer fudd" character by playing dice?

Reminds of that one old "Superman" cartoon where he basically defeats Japan by himself...that one's banned too, IIRC.

Funny. I especcially liked how Popeye suddenly had a hole in his shoe just big enough for the bomb, with ruunner up going to the Americanized version of the suicide process for the Japenese commander.

I have an old Howard Stern show where they were talking about WW2 Bugs Bunny cartoons that are now too un-PC to show. Billy West (Ren &Stimpy, Fururama) was on the show and did some hilarious racist Bugs Bunny, Yosemite Sam impersonations.

BUGS: "I didn't want to say those racist things. I only did it because the kikes at Warner Brothers made me."

I thought it was funny, but I agree with the ban. I don't think little kids should see that because there are too many stupid kids that would start imitating Popeye and fight Japanese kids at school. If some kids are dumb enough to try to fly like Superman by putting their hands in the air and jumping out windows, they're dumb enough to try this. And there's plenty of tales of Japanese people facing persecution during WWII because of people actually believing propaganda like that. So...that's how I back up my opinion. (Prepares for flaming for supporting PC ban...)

Wonder if the same will happen to the most anti-Russian of Cold War-era spy movies???

I can understand your thinking on this but (especially in this timeframe) but what I don't want to see is what actually happened being pushed under the carpet.

My grandfather had a raging hatred for ALL orientals not just the Japanese. His reasons are quite understandable, and in a sense justifiable. His brother died in the camps (was captured at the fall of Singapore).

First of all, the preferred term is Asian, or East Asian, not oriental. Second, if you're saying that your grandfather has a raging hatred for Asians, because of something the Japanese military did, that is racism. Especially considering whose side China was on.

neo, while I sympathize, Oriental does mean Eastern, and all of Asia has been referred to as the Orient for time immemorial. I don't have any ancestors from the Caucasus, and my skin ain't white no more than an African is black, yet those are the only options I get: Caucasian and White.

And the Chinese were on their own side in the war. Chiang Kai-Shek didn't give a rat's ass about the war against Germany or Japan; he was more worried about Mao Zedong and the Communists. He was truly a little tin pot dictator who was run by his wife and never understood international politics or even his own nation's internal politics. While I agree that to hate all people from Asia because of Bata'an and the atrocities performed by the IJA is stupid, to argue that China was some staunchly loyal member of the Allies is historically illegitimate.

I'm not personally offended. I'm just saying that Oriental refers to objects. Asian refers to the people. And some people get pretty worked up over it.

I never said that China was exactly fully an ally, but at least in name they were an ally, and weren't off killing the Allies like the Axis powers were. Perhaps I was unclear.
