BAsically, a list of things that will destroy vast amounts of your brain, your intelligence, and generally just twist and warp your mind. At present, I have only come up with the following:
Janeway Porn
Reading through the DarkStar debate
Marathon watching Serial Experiments: Lain
End of Evangelion
What are some others?

Is that an absolute statement ? In ethics, we've actually "proven" (it's not mathematical, but it is logical) that some ethical ideas must be absolute for society to exist.Exonerate wrote:Knowing there is no absolute morality.
1. Children must be protected. Unless children are protected, they will die. If this occurs, the elders of the society will not be replaced. Upon their deaths, the society will cease to exist (witness the Shakers; celibacy has led to their extinction. I believe there are 6 Shakers still alive, all in their 70s).
2. Murder (cold-blooded murder, not self defense or war) must be immoral. Otherwise no person can trust another not to murder them. This would make cooperation impossible. Additionally, intelligent members of the civilization would attempt to get as far away from everybody else as possible, dispersing the society and leading to its termination.
3. Truth must be held as moral. Otherwise, there is no meaningful communication between people. One could not even ask the time of day and be assured that they now know when it is. The Enron scandal provides an example of why truth is an ideal that cultures must hold. In a society that does not believe truth is moral, they would have suffered no penalties, and corporations would be free to continue falsifying books.

Dark, are you familiar with an essay by James Rachels called "Morality is not Relative"? Because he deals with the same stuff (taking care of infants, truth, murder) that you do here. Just curious. The Dark wrote:Is that an absolute statement ? I'm studying for the CPA exam. Have a nice summer, and if you're down just sit back and realize that Joe is off somewhere, doing much worse than you are.

We his The Challenge of Cultural Relativism for Ethics. It may be the same essay; it begins with the discussion of the Greeks and Callatians as described by Herodotus. Of course, only three of us read the assignment, so most of the class decided that ws important without reading it. We're also using Barbara MacKinnon's Ethics, James Fieser's Metaethics, Normative Ethics, and Applied Ethics, and Dr. Robert Zeuschner's Classical Ethics: East and West. Personally, I feel ethical values are mostly the same, but their expressions are different.Dark, are you familiar with an essay by James Rachels called "Morality is not Relative"? Yeah, that's the exact same article; I just read it not 30 minutes ago for my ethics class. Funny coincidence. The Dark wrote:We his The Challenge of Cultural Relativism for Ethics. Actually, all people are moral realativists. Its just that its part of your morals to believe that there are such things as Absolutemorals. However, since this is off-topic, I'll make a different thread for it.Durran Korr wrote:The fact that people believe in things like creationism, moral relativism, and homeopathic medicine.

Reading Voyager pornfics, you'd be surprised how many of them involve Janeway.
Work at Customs screening porn, you either learn to laugh at the latest bondage/snuff/defecation/beastiality flick or you lose your mind.
Work in a place that's full of religious fundies trying to convert you, I'm surprised I didn't go postal.

I am capable of rearranging the fundamental building blocks of the universe in under six seconds. I shelve physics texts under "Fiction" in my personal library! I am grasping the reigns of the universe's carriage, and every morning get up and shout "Giddy up, boy!" You may never grasp the complexities of what I do, but at least have the courtesy to feign something other than slack-jawed oblivion in my presence. I, sir, am a wizard, and I break more natural laws before breakfast than of which you are even aware!
