SITE SOFTWARE UPGRADE: READ NOW!!

I need to take this site down for approx. 1/2 hour at some point this weekend to upgrade the software. I've been putting it off, but the new software is supposed to resolve some bugs, speed up board response, etc. and I really think it would be a good idea. Anyone have any preferences on when this operation is performed?

When its not traffic peak hours... I have no idea when that would be, but you're the admin; check the logs.

Nope, just tell me ahead of time when it's going to happen.

How about in 5 or so hours (I think that is the quiet time), or in 12 hours where there are usually 4 or 5 or us on? But either way you put up the warning so most people will know what is going on.

Early in the morning, when I won't be up yet because it's the weekend.

OK, dead time is around 4-5AM in my timezone, which would be great except that I plan to be asleep. It builds slowly from that point on, until it reaches a peak right around now: middle of the evening. So, right now is the worst time.

Therefore, I plan to do it either tomorrow morning or Sunday morning. You'll know if it's already been done when you see "Powered by phpBB 2.0.4" in the page footer instead of "Powered by phpBB 2.0.3". If you happen to try to log in while it's down, you'll see a message saying that the board is unavailable at this time.

Huh. <scratches head> That's interesting. I have more problems with timeouts and other connection issues several hours later than in the 7-9pm (EST) window that you're saying is the peak traffic time. Going by the board's response times I had assumed that peak traffic period was from 11pm-1am.

Trust me, 4-5 am Mountain time on a Friday night (tonight) or Saturday night (tomorrow night) because that is when it is slowest on weekends. Nobody posts. Lots of people logged in sometimes, but no one doing anything. That would be 6-7 am EST.

We need anything that will speed up the board. Be warned though, if my Saturday morning cartoons is ruined by not being able to get on SD, heads will roll.

I think we missed THAT window, which leaves us with early Sunday morning.

Whenever its convenient for you Mike. Thats the main thing to be concerned about. Sure, it'll be a minor annoyance for us if we can't logon, but we'll get over it.

OK, the software update is done (took an hour instead of half an hour, but other than that, everything seemed to go smoothly). Please let me know ASAP if there are any problems with the new version.

Is there anything this new version has that the old one didn't?

It's supposed to have MUCH better performance when editing or deleting posts, as well as some security fixes.

EDIT: so far, this seems to be true, although it's not peak time yet. Editing performance was god-awful with the last version, as I'm sure you noticed.
