First Post and a Question

Hello all. First post, so just saying hello. And, since it is my first post, I thought I'd ask a pretty useless question that has no real importance.
What in the Hell does the Scroll Lock key do? Sorry if it's really simple, but I see it there, I can detect no noticable difference if it happens to be on, and now I'm wondering.
Thanks, and please go easy on this one. I'm not into that side of computers too much, so sorry if my ignorance is showing.

It has different uses for different programs.
As an example, while using spreadsheets like Lotus, Quattro, or Excel, the up and down arrow keys will advance you up and down the cells. If you turn on the scroll lock, the up and down keys will scroll up and down the page, while the same cell remains selected.
