Sci-fi Conventions

I've never been to a Sci-fi convention but I've heard some people there are like major fan-boys with no life. If I have an opportunity to go to one, should I go or avoid it?

I've also heard that horror conventions are more fun to attend.

Sci-fi conventions that focus on TV and movie media can get pretty bad. More fanboys than one can shake a stick at.

Science fiction conventions, such as WorldCon, that center around book fiction attract a more mature audience and are much better.

MarCon, a Con based around all manner of sci-fi and fantasy(Mostly books, I understand the guy who writes Honor Harrington did a bit there a few years ago) is fun as hell. Especially when the costumes come out, the people spending a year dead in honor of Adams are in their bathrobes, and Dr. Demento is DJing.

There will always be whacked out fanboys. But some of the stuff there is usually pretty cool. If it has stuff you like, you might as well go.

I reccomend them, I attend both MarCon and GenCon as often as possible, these are both primarialy wargame and RPG cons, along with the usual assortment of guests from the sci-fi and fantasy world. Take your camera, and leave reason at the door. You'll see everything from cool demi-stars(people only really famous in the sci-fi world, last GenCon I went to they had the dude who played Admiral Piett from ESB signing autographs, only at a Con would he be signing 8x12 glossys of himself in the ESB uniform) to gameing legends and folks in costume. Cos-players tend to fall into two categories, "cool costumers" and "uglies in spandex". Cool Costumers have put a lot of effort into their costumes and look the part for whatever character they are playing. Uglies in spandex on the other hand are thoes sad individuals who despite morbid obesity or other infirmity insist on dressing as a harem girl, or one of Jabbas slave women(and not the porky one!) or some scantily clad anime character. The worst example of this is the Transvestite Sailor Moon crowd, if you see a man dressed as Sailor Mercury, RUN, RUN AS FAST AS YOU CAN.........thats what we did

All in all though Cons are tons of fun , with many cool people to hook up with, I highly reccomend hooking up with you local Barship Enterprise chapter, they are a Party Star Trek crew that know how to have a seriously good time. We did last MarCon and had a fucking blast, and got blasted and molested by Orion slave women ! Victory all around !!

Go! Enjoy! You may never have the opportunity to meet some of these people ever again in your life. Yes, there are the really strange people, but they tend to stay to themselves. I am an annual attender of DragonCon in Atlanta and have enjoyed every year. And trust me, there are PLENTY of weirdos there.

Here's what you need to remember about horror cons. There are a lot of people out there who truly believe they are vampires. These "goths" are actually very dangerous. They are false wiccans and REALLY get into character a bit too much.

So, horror cons are not any more "fun to attend" than a sci-fi con. Whoever told you that must not be a sci-fi fan.

A good sci-fi con is like Comicon...lots of strange people(usually some of the attendees than the con-goers). But aside from hiked up food prices, loads of fun and you get to see people you'd really have no other chance than there.

So go, have fun and bring something nice smelling....more for them at times then yourself...and money...you'll find something trivial but you must have.

I've never been to a sci-fi con but I happened to be in San Diego during one of the yearly Comic Cons.

I only went for one day but it was cool. I got to see Clive Barker promoting "The Thief of Always". He was pretty funny and asked what movies were good to see at that time.

I saw William Shatner from the very back of a very large room. He was mainly pluggins some of his "Tek" stuff but he was pretty good to see. There were definately fan boys in that audience. Everyone trying to be a smart ass when they asked him questions, none of them very original. One guy wanted him to re-enact his "Get A Life" skit from Saturday night live. Some other guy followed that up with the same stupid question that was asked during that skit (the combo to the safe from a certain episode).

I also saw Francis Ford Copalla and his son Roman as they were plugging "Bram Stoker's Dracula". We got to see some cool clips before they were released to the public. The fan boys at his presentation were more the movie buff type and not as geeky as the ones who asked Shatner all those questions.

There were also alot of people to see at the various industry booths.

Lots of places to buy stuff too.

I think that Cons are a bit of a gamble but if people you want to see are going to be there it'll probably be cool. Otherwise I'd shoot for the larger ones because they might have better possibilities for you.

Yes...larger ones if for nothing else the organization setting them up is usuaully better.

My only beef with anime cons is set up(oh jeebus trying to understand when to get tables...uh sorry)

Well go to bigger ones...also better quality of guest usually unless a particular guest likes a particular con.

You were at the USS Casual(NCC REVOKED) party? I think I trekked through there twice and got my cherry popped(Only those at MarCon would understand that....). Next year, I'm finding you and whacking you with a small stuffed snake.

Aye maty! However this was like 4 years ago.......I havent been to MarCon since I started school here at Purdue, and while its only a trip to Ft. Wayne, I always seem to have a project or paper due that weekend.
