Pshh, George is just trying to look good for his Daddy. George Sr. had the pipe dream of putting men on Mars by 2020 I think. And really, it's just another way for him to subvert the Nuclear Test Ban treaty and get SDI going. You can get people to Mars cheaply using ordinary chemical propellants. We could likely have gone to Mars already if it weren't for political foot-dragging.

Yes nuclear propulsion would be more efficient for space travel in the long-run, but I'm not sure I'd trust Dubya to help develop it.

Don't you mean Dubya's money and not Dubya himself?

Blah, we should develope tech that benifits us (as in the world) and not worry about treaties that were made with countries that no longer exist.

IMHO.

I've seen the stories and I'm skeptical. Most seem to be heavily based on rumor.

Note NASA's claims the emphasis of the project will be on nuclear reactors rather than nuclear rockets. Think for a moment about how much power a directed energy weapon requires and how best to generate it in the absense of virtually all resources.

Also consider that it would be far cheaper to obtain heavy&stupid SDI building materials (i.e. structural components, KE warheads, etc) by mining the moon and NEAs rather than by launching dumb mass from the ground. Nuclear rockets will certainly open the door to the NEAs and heavy-lift access the moon.

This sounds like a cover for SDI more than anything else.

Name a technology, which is not dual use. Hint, there isn't one.

However the Guardian is a supermarket tabloid when it comes to reliability. I'd bet this is just one big load of crap.

Imagine that: a productive reason to encourage space exploration. Why all we are missing now is Martians so we can steal their land and sell worthless beads to them.

I don't believe it. Might be to help is SDI by getting Nasa involved over the long term.

I'm pretty sceptical about this, but if it's true, then I might just be in place to get involved in it by the time it gets going...

Yes the sarcasm was there because I was mocking your mocking. Humanity has always expanded into new realms in search of additional resorces and land in which to live. If Bush has the same motives then it merely confirms that he is human lets all stop pretending hes doing something evil here unless you want to condemn all the actions of all of humanity since we left the fertile crescent.

I have almost reached the regrettable conclusion that the Negro's great stumbling block in his stride toward freedom is not the White Citizen's Counciler or the Ku Klux Klanner, but the white moderate, who is more devoted to "order" than to justice; who constantly says: "I agree with you in the goal you seek, but I cannot agree with your methods of direct action"; who paternalistically believes he can set the timetable for another man's freedom; who lives by a mythical concept of time and who constantly advises the Negro to wait for a "more convenient season."
