You would think these companies would take a hint and quit sending me shit, after all I am a broke college student, but noooooooo. BTW folks, when telemarketers call your house, don't just hang up, tell them to take you off their calling list, they have to by law.

Btw, about telemarketers (AKA dinner-wreckers) tell them to take your number out of the computer system, and ask that they verify it. By law they have to, and it shuts down their entire call center for at least an hour while they purge your number out of the system.

My friends' dad has had lots of fun with telemarketers. He once ordered 40 windows because his all had bullet holes in them, only to cancel at the last minute.

hehe, if you really want to have fun with telemarketers, act like a damn drunk hick. That gets em off the line faster than any method. Especially if you yell alot.

Ehh, it doesn't provide any illegal but not neccisarily tracable things to do to get back at them, although the method is cool, it could be a lot funnier as an article if it include things you could do to them that are illegal. Like the stuff in the Avenger's Handbook, halarious read.

Tha't gets followup calls from mental health professionals. JWs are considered harmless enough kooks that the telemarketers don't call the men in white coats, but annoying enough that they don't call back.

Or moan and pant between sentences to give the impression of having a wank or a menage a trois whilst on the phone. The telemarketer may actually use the phrase "Did I catch you at a bad time?" for once. A rare event indeed.

I think it might be federal law, otherwise it would be fairly useless.

As a side note, Wired put forward an intresting method of stopping calls. Whenever you call a phone number that doesn't exist, you get a three tone beep, then the message saying that this number does not exist. IF you start screening yuour calls, and have the middle tone at the start of your answering machine, Telemarketing computers automatically remove you from their calling lists, since, obviously, the numberis disconnected.

Federal law. The actual term is the "do not call list." You request to beplaced on that company's "Do Not Call" list and if they call you within the next year then they can be fined something like $15k. now there are two caveats to this obvioulsy:

1) You need to know which company is calling you (Mastercard doesn't do their own dirty work so you need to keep track of which telemarketing firm is contacting you)
2) If you put yourself onto a list make sure you note WHO the company is and WHEN you were placed on the list. If they violate it then make sure you call up the FCC and get them fined.

Just use the three tone sound for a disconnected call and the automated systems will not call you again.

And for a side note, automated call systems are illegal too...
