[OT] First day at the Uni

by Eleas
To make a long story short, I survived. The unabridged story follows.

I just concluded my introductory day at the University of Lund, where I enrolled at the Math course for spring term. My first reflection: "hey, this is pretty cool; I can get used to this." My second: "campus is fucking huge!"

The city itself comprises around 100,000 people. Normally, Unis are part of a town. Here, it's the other way around. It's like walking through a gigantic, well-oiled industry, only this one cranks out diplomas and doctors instead of cars and goods. So the city isn't large, but the facility definitely is.

Everything about the city is geared toward the students. Everything caters to them. There's literally nothing else notable about Lund but the Uni and the fact that homicidal bicyclists make life difficult for thine fellow men*. Bars, recreational activity, night clubs, hell there's probably an organised Scifi community, I just never bothered to look. The prospective student is smothered with invitations and suggestions on what to do in their spare time. It's a bit overwhelming, really.

So far, everything seems cool. My jitters are receding. Still, this is a pretty big step toward that dismal future where I eventually must work for my living. I will fight that fate, tooth and nail, being the slacker that I am.

And I'll probably lose. But there's a bright side to that sad fact. At least this way I'll have some more ammunition in the debate. ;)

* ...and women. Sorry, Loretta.

Is this your first semester at any university?

Regardless, congratulations on reaching university. College is pretty cool, especially in a college town. Here's hoping everything goes smoothly for you.

Because my connection decided to act up, a double-post was made. Dammit.

Yeah. :)

Thank you. I'm a bit nervous right now but I feel sure it'll pass once I get my bearings straight.

First assignment is about geometric sums... fairly advanced with my rusty skills, but I did it before, so...

Mathematics basic package, one term. That's just a filler before the real stuff starts in autumn. I'm taking Civilingenjör Data - this loosely translates to some kind of basic Engineer course with a subspecialisation on computers.

And no, I'm not gonna use that as a bashing tool in VS debates. Honest.

Quite a few cities and towns in the US are 'university towns,' though some try and deny it (like Evanston) :D

Excellent! Congrats and welcome to the first day of the rest of your life! :D

Things can be a little overwhelming for the first week or 2 until you settle into things, and having a town built around a university can be quite the novel experience. I still remember my first month at Princeton, wowee it was like nothing I'd ever lived through before. The university was a town unto itself and it was also the main focal point of the town of Princeton! The campus was huge, I mean this thing was the size of a small town and I needed a bike to get to all my classes on time, and in the winter I had to run to make it! Sure kept me in good shape though. Live for the moment and enjoy things, these will be the bes years of your life and you'll have fond memories of the people and events for the rest of your life. Congrats again! :D

Congrats on getting into Uni. We've got quite a few college towns in the US (Gainesville comes to mind just for Florida). 100k's not too bad for city and uni, our Big Three in FL are each around 40k just for the uni. Out of curiosity, what're you planning to do with a math degree?

Grattis! :D

Fixa ett jobb efteråt bara svårt som fan inom data just nu men... :D

Some info for our yank friends.
Lund, University of, institution of higher education located in the ancient city of Lund in Sweden, and operated under the supervision of the chancellor of Swedish universities. The institution was founded in 1666 during the minority of Charles XI and was then mainly financed by the Protestant Church of Sweden. It was closed in 1676 because of war with Denmark, but reopened in 1682 under the same auspices. In 1882 it was reorganized as a State-supported institution.

Faculties of the university include humanities, law, mathematics and natural sciences, medicine, odontology, political and social sciences, technology, and theology. The language of instruction is Swedish. In 1997 the teaching staff numbered about 5,800, and the student enrolment was about 42,000. The library, established in 1671, contains more than 4.4 million volumes.
Lund is second only Uppsala :D

Shame that I never went to any uni

My sister goes to the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, which is clearly a university-town. Hell, Bloomington-Normal unquestionably is, as well.

And congratulations, Bjorn, I'm sure you'll enjoy the university lifestyle.

Ann Arbor, yeah. Gainesville (University of Florida) is also as well.

Nothing says you can't start late in life. I did.

And congrats Bjorn. Good luck.

Tack. :) Och jo, jag vet... men har man en examen av nåt slag är det nog bra mycket enklare; det visar att man kan jobba, inte bara slänga ihop nåt fint på fem sekunder. *g*

There is always hope. :)

The Dark wrote:Out of curiosity, what're you planning to do with a math degree?
Well, I figure it'll help me later on in other studies... and dunno if it's a full-blown degree, it's just for a term, no biggie. :)

Phil, Damien, Dark, jmac: thanks for the kind words. I hope what you say will come true. This course is murder though. We got seven questions and I was immediately reminded of why I never did like Math that much. :(

Edit: Oh, by the way, to commemorate the historical occasion of my 1000th post, I decided to bring back an old friend. Heh heh heh.

Glad you're sorta enjoying yourself...and don't worry. It gets easier...and usually more fun.

I mean you have 4-5 years ahead of ya...enjoy them, and well with a Math Degree anything engineer related or just something else?

Hah! The return of Jaina Dax...oddly enough, when Björn goes to Uni, where you do most of the experimenting during your life ;)

Good luck, Björn. I didn't go to a college town university, but it was close.

I'd say that the best city on the planet would qualify.

Do they know how to properly "greet" noobs over there?

POKE!!!!

Some 2002 noobs from my college. (I've graduated, technically I can no longer poke, but there it is.)

Hah! Yeah. Not technically in the city, but close enough.

Yup, the one in New Jersey where Albert Einstein taught physics way back when, and yeah, it's so amazing that I got to do my studies there. Some days I have to pinch myself to make sure I'm not dreaming when I think about the fact that I actually graduated from Princeton. :D

Thanks to an athletic scholarship for swimming, it actually cost me less to go there than a Canadian university! And the craziest thing is my younger sister is also studying there too thanks to you guessed it, a swim scholarship!

To me it's not that big of a deal that I went to Princeton, it was just an amazing experience that I happened to stumble upon somehow. Please don't prostrate yourself or anything, it makes me feel so self-consious when people do that.

Since no one else has mentioned it yet, go out and chase after all the hot chicks and have lots of sex! That's what university's really for, they don't hand out free condoms for nothing you know. :D

Congrats, and enjoy!

Ah Uni.

The first week of which at UTAS is always mayhem.

And its going to be worse this year. They are rebuilding the UniBar (OK, so that party got a LITTLE out of hand...) and by the looks of things its not going to be finished for O-week.

And if it isn't you can be damn sure that much blood will be spilt as sober and angry students rampage.
