The commander of the 404th Figher Group, Colonel Leo C. Moon had
the captured Focke-Wulf Fw 190G repainted as a classic red American
hotrod in hopes of flying his "prize". His hopes were soon shattered
when he was ordered not to fly the aircraft. To emphasize this point,
the base anti-aircraft guns were ordered to shoot him down, if he
ever attempted to fly it.

Haha, the Irony. The best German propellor aircraft painted red as a target with a huge American star.

My grandfather was an AA gunner in North Africa. I'll have to ask him about that.

Probably because it was not
his airplane. If you capture an enemy plane, it needs to be studied, flown by aggressor units, or used for some other useful purpose. Government aircraft are not toys.

He probably didn't capture it. Most likely Army forces overran an airfield, and the German aircraft were moved back for study and analysis.

That's also the motto of F-14 pilots with a full load of AIM-54's
