Do you think video games are responsible for the violence in society?

Videogames are scapegoats for everything soccer moms hate in society.

No. The media reflects society, they don't create it. The problem is the consumerist society in America. Most families have two parents working full-time jobs, leading to children without a moral compass. Good parenting is what creates good moral values, and without that, society will continue to deteriorate.

They are in no way responsible.

In a word: no.
I realize I'm making a sweeping generalization, but...
Lefties like to believe that people are inherently good, rational, and nice. Nevermind that this view flies in the face of most of recorded history. Violent video games are the latest scapegoat to explain away why violence in human affairs is such an ongoing problem. Before GTA 3, it was violent movies/TV shows, or violent music, or porn, etc. ect. ad nauseum. Ban them all and there wouldn't be a drop in violence, because it wouldn't address any of the root problems which cause violence.
I personally play Quake III, Unreal Tournament 2003, and Aliens Vs. Predator 2: by their "logic" I should have long ago snapped and indulged in some grotesque bloodbath. Oddly enough, I haven't been in a fight since high school (11 years and counting.)

I'd say it's bad parenting. When parents don't teach their kids the difference between fantasy and reality, and do little to actually raise their kids, that's what causes school shootings and the like. I've played violent video games, and so have many other people I know, and they're not any more violent than the other people at my school.

blaming video game violence is a cop out. People need to monitor their children and learn how to parent.

Post it, or at least PM it to me. I'd like to see your take on the situation.

Parents are responsible for there children, Videogames are not.

Not by a long shot.
Parents use this as an excuse because they don't want people to realize because they have no knowledge of their child and have consistently ignored said child, they believe that Video-games will be the end all be all explaination. Also given Video games current look as being in the domain of children, violence in them is thought as an easy tool to single out and point blame towards.

Parents are SUPPOSED to be responsible for their children. Not so nowadays. They throw the responsibility to teachers, workers at movie theaters and people at the mall.
(this is a generalization, not about every parent.)

Lieberman IS a Democrat, which is connotated with "liberal".

I need to find a great cartoon where they had a bunch of people sitting around trying to determine the cause of all the problems in todays youth.
They go through things like deep-seated social issues - too hard, bad parenting - too controversial.
And so on and so on, until they finally decide to blame everything on violence in videogames.

Something i`m wondering if there is a rating system for violence in some video games why do parents let their kids play with games like GTA3.
if your not 18 years old you should`nt play with it.

Dude, neither political party in the US is liberal. Just like the Liberals in Australia are about as far right wing as you can get without turning back the clock about 70 years.

Just another excuse for Politicians to pull at the irrational heart-strings of soccer moms nation-wide, just like they did concering Jazz, comic books, and 80's fashions.
The only kids who are going to wig-out from watching red pixels fly out of CG plastic dolls are ones who are already disturbed in the first place, and they'll wig-out anyway due to things like football, summer camp, someone dropping a spoon, etc. It doesn't do jack to anyone else becasue they're sane enough to know how to separate fantasy from reality.
Look at me, I've been playing stuff like
Mortal Kombat II since I was 11, and I can't stand the sight of real blood. I almost pass out if I see someone get a paper cut (this I will obviously have to get over if the nation ever collapses into anarchy, and I start my personal tank batallion
).

Thanks Jaeger, I was starting to wonder whether Lieberman switched parties after the whole Gore for President fiasco.
As for my "bashing," you'll get used to it. I hate both organized political parties and the extremists who make up their most vocal membership with a passion, whether it be the Religious Reich or the Looney Left. Since I live in Maryland and Democrats tend to be the party in charge, I tend to be more critical of them (they're the devil I know.)

Because alot of parents are just plain
stupid, the same ones who bring their 3-year-olds into
Alien Ressurection.
I played that game while I was 17. I was perfectly mature enough to handle most Mature video games at age 11 and I did fine. It's the immature ones who either find it terrifying or just whoop and run around over killing fake things that you have to worry about. They'll get wild and rambunctious, sure, but only enough to convince those statitics nuts that the've turned into violent criminals (
Reefer Madness!! ).
It really is something that depends on the individual to be able to tolerate it, but nothing beyond that.
