Well, my great-grandmother was killed in the Holocaust, and I'm part Jewish, so it does mean something to me.

Care to explain why this day is significant to the multi year Holocaust which had no real defined beggining nor end?

It's Holocaust Memorial Day in the UK.

Oh, I thought it was Krystalnok(sp?) which is generally regarded as the start of the Holocaust by some scholars.

Kristalnacht is in November. Um, I think.

Actually, it appears that today is HMD in several European countries...

Was that when they threw rocks in Jewish stores and stuff like that?

Yes.

IIRC, Kristalnacht means "The Night of Broken Glass" in German.

Reichskristallnacht is 9th november, unfortunatly forever ruining that date for holidays. (9th november is sometimes called the german fate day, it´s the day of the founding of the first german republic (1918), the Reichskristallnacht(1938) and the day the berlin wall fell (1989), effectively starting each of germans major historical epochs.)

And Kristallnacht simply means crystal-night.

Well, that's how it's often transliterated into English as.

And more appropriate too. What the fuck did it have to do with crystals anyway, I don´t remember. Probably something about their fucked up ideology. Oh well, I need to remember my history better.

But it is still a shame that the wall fell on this day. It would have been really cool to have reunification day on the same day instead of an arbitrary date, but no they had to do it on the 9th november of all days.

I bet someone was laughing at the irony then, probably the guy who decided to do it on the 9th.

While none of my ancestors were in the Holocaust, I still look back on it as part of my family's history. My maternal grandfather was part of the occupation force with the 8th Infantry Division, which freed the prisoners at Neurengamme. I've used that to counter some of the "holocaust never happened" revisionists, since I've seen photographs he took. The horrors perpetrated by both the Third Reich and Imperial Japan must never be forgotten, or we shall someday repeat them.

It means "Night of the Broken Glass" and is the historical and entirely appropriate name, because those acting against the Jews broke the windows of their shops, homes, and synagogues. The modification of history is its subtle destruction, and even in the name we get a sense of what the brutal chaos of that evening must have been.
