God did it! God did it!

Post by Perinquus »

I know this sort of thing has been put up on this board before, but what does this say about people that this is such a universally constant response to a traumatic experience?

Here's the story:

http://www.theneworleanschannel.com/new ... etail.html

I'm referring to this particular statement by the crash survivor:
God was definitely in control, and that's all I can say. There's no way that a coincidence would happen that I made it through five rolls (with) no head injury, not wearing my seatbelt, and flew onto power lines," Thompson said. "And I just happened to land on the neutral power line that had now (sic) power.
It seems like everybody who has a remarkable survival story says "God was watching over me", and it NEVER seems to occur to them that if God's in control of everything, then he put them through that hair raising close call in the first place (and maybe killed friends or relatives of theirs who weren't lucky enough to survive).

Is there any hope than humanity will ever shake off this silly superstition?

Probably not for a while.

A good too many people really believe every good act comes from God, every evil from Satan.

Strange how many believe God to be all-powerful and yet things like mass-murder, etc happens...all under his benevolent eyes, and for what reason "He's testing us."

Some people feel the need to believe in something beyond comprehension cause what they feel is happening to them is beyond comprehension.

Course, we just call it chance.

I suspect the "no head injury" part would be disputed by his doctor. Probably the result of shock.

God wanted to give him a reminder of how merciful he is. Can't you heathens see the blatantly obvious act of mercy by God?

Of course, everything is God's will. He must've got mad at him for some reason.

Actually to most...God tests you...you survive.

If someone dies...God is ignoring you because you're a heathen bastard....or Satan.

Seriously working around people who tell me, go to Chruch and God will make things better and blaming stuff on evil or lack of worship has shown me to too many

Bad=Your fault
Good=God's favor.

And seriously this is why I work with headphones, blasting either old AC/DC music or old Metallica.

Thank you again for reinforcing my belief that they'll ALWAYS be another excuse. Some people will never learn. Others don't want to. Can you guess which category this guy falls under?

The phrase "God works in mysterious ways" come to mind.
God was definitely in control, and that's all I can say. There's no way that a coincidence would happen that I made it through five rolls (with) no head injury, not wearing my seatbelt, and flew onto power lines," Thompson said. "And I just happened to land on the neutral power line that had now (sic) power.

People say that kind of thing becuase they want to see god as a moral entity. People want to believe this so much that they are willing to ignore all the bad and just see the good.

If a person is badly injured but survives, the people will totally ignore the bad part because it goes against something they so honestly want to believe.

Wait a minute, that article is from New Orleans, which is in the DEEP South. In other words, this guy is a redneck from the Bible Belt. Should it surprise anyone? :P

The only time I've invoked the name of god was when I was hung over and puking in the toilet and mumbling "fucking god, make this shit stop", fat load of good that did. From which we derive the saying "praying to the porcelain god". :D

Saw an interview with the lucky bastard tonight on the news. He didn't seem like much of a redneck, no accent, well groomed and dressed. Apparently he didn't spend any time in the hospital, the interview was at home and he was in street clothes.
And the interview included the "god was in control" quote.

Would you guys think that attributing such luck (article above) to hidden psychic powers resulting from the most recent evolutionary changes to the human genome is more likely than invoking God?

Actually, yes...at least, I would. I believe that the human mind is beginning to show an ability to shape/change/read the environment it's in.

You need strong psychic powers to prevent injury from an accident like that...

My new theory is that psychic powers and intelligence and inversely proportional.

Reminds me of what happened to me today, I was running to catch a bus, I began to chant "Their is a God" in hopes that this decleration would ensure that I make it. When I didn't make it, I sighed and repeated "Their is no God...Their is no God". :P
