I just got the Fellowship of the Ring DVD, and I was watching the prologue (Galadriel's little talk at the start).

During the scene they show from the Second Age, just after Sauron was killed, I think Legolas briefly makes an appearance during the battle.

After the Ring is cut from Sauron's finger, there is a shockwave, and then a cut to a scene fo that knocking everyone over, and then we are shown a shot of Isildur as he struggles to get up from the ground (or, at least, raise himself a bit). Immediately after that, we see a shot of some elves. Is Legolas the one in focus, just to the left of center? I was not aware that he participated in the battle, or, indeed, that he was even alive during the Second Age (though neither really surprises me). Anyone know, or just want to speculate?

I have noticed that too. He just might be. Most of the elf warriors were there. But wouldn't they have put something in the movie about it?

Legolas did not show up in the original Tolkein novel version of the Battle of the Last Alliance. We have no idea whether he was alive and around during that time. His grandfather died during that war though, and his son (Legolas' father) Thraduil took over. So we know his father was there.

Some people have argued that Legolas couldn't have been born during that time, since in the book he claimed to have little to no knowledge or experience with the elves of Lorien, despite the fact that Galadriel and Celeborn featured prominently in that effort.

But in the movie continuity, Orlando Bloom has said Legolas is nigh 3000 years old, so he would have been a young man... er, elf... at the time of the Battle of the Last Alliance.
