Super Bowl XLII thread (with poll!)

Cause I wanna get a poll in, not cause I think the last thread is too big, but 39 pages is awesome.

Patriots win by at least 14 and I'll hate them for it. :x Or so I think, they still have to play the game of course.

I don't particularly care one way or the other. If the Pats win, it'll be history and shut the Dolphins the hell up. If the Giants win, it'll be the whole underdog triumphs over the king of the hill story.

Whichever way, I either get to console or celebrate with a pretty girl who's a Giants fan.

That said, the Patriots are gonna blow the Giants out. I think NY shot all their mojo off getting to the big game. They'll hang on during the first half but the second half will have the Pats running away with.

That's my prediction.

The 12 point spread is bogus. The last time they played, the giants only lost by three. If they can beat Green Bay, they can beat the Pats.

I'm hoping the Giants can pull off the upset, not because I care about NY, but because I'm sick of hearing about how great the Pats are. They've already got book deals about the "Perfect season" and are taking orders, even before the final chapter is written for crying out loud. I would laugh to see that "book" end on a bitter note.

I don't know about this logic, but I'm with you on the spread. Giants for me.

Sounds awfully like the lead up to last years AFL grand final...and while I'll bet almost no-one else in this thread would know what I'm talking about, the historical precedent means I'm going for the Pats.

Listen to my prophecy, my children, and listen well. I have consulted the Oracle of Pizza and Crown Royale... and this is what I was told.

Patriots by 12 points. Over/under at 54.

Final score: Patriots 33, Giants 21.

The Oracle has spoken!

I'm not a huge sports fan but I'm from New York so I'll go with the Giants. (Yeah I know that's a dumb reason) But, this is the best I've seen them in like forever.

Or you know, in 2000 when they got to the Super Bowl. Oh wait... you were like, 7 huh?

And actually rooting for the home team is the least dumb reason to root for a team. It's when you root for a team from another city that you have never even been to and you have to start giving reasons to justify it. That's when you automatically get "dumb".

There is another way to automatically get it. When you like a team because of the colors on their uniform, that qualifies for a "dumb" label too.

I'm going with the Giants simply because I want to see them shut the Patriots up. As fun as it would be to see the '72 Dolphins cry, I'm young enough that I've heard more from Tom Brady than them, so I want to see him cry when Eli gets MVP and a ring. *crosses fingers*

It's like the tag line for AvP. Whichever wins, we lose. I'm actually boycotting the Superbowl this year.

Both teams have whiny cunts at QB. Both are teams I loath. One teams is full of a bunch of no good cheating cheaters who cheat. And not even in a way that helps them all that much. So they're stupid cheaters.

How about childhood memories?
The original reasons* why have been lost in the mists of time, but I've liked the Steelers since I was 7 years old.
At the risk of showing I'm an old man, that was back in 1974. :P

That said, I pick the Pats by a touchdown.

*If anything, I should have been a Dolphins fan, as Evansville is Bob Griese's hometown and Miami fan gear was a dime a dozen at the time.

I picked the Patriots to win, but I hope that the Giants win, because I'm from Indiana and therefore am obligated to despise the Patriots.

Holy Christ, you're old.
So old that I remember seeing Star Wars during its original theatrical release in the summer of '77. :P

Surlethe:
You didn't have to edit it out, as I'm not offended at all by the comment.
Like I've said previously, I realized I was old when I'd see some 18 year old at the mall with her family and think 'Wow! Her mom is hot!'.

My preferences are in order:
1. Steelers.
2. Colts.
3. Any team that ends the 1972 Dolphins wanking.

By that standard, I'm rooting for the Pats.

The only reason I am a 9ers fan is that when I started really liking and watching football, there WERE NO Oakland Raiders. Thank god. (Hey, maybe he does exist?)

So I ran the Madden Simulation last night, and this is how it shaped up:

Scoring:

1st Quarter:

None

2nd Quarter:

TD NE: Brady to simulated Washington (Gostkowski kick)

TD NYG: Manning to Burress (Tynes kick)

TD NE: Brady to Moss (Gostkowski kick)

FG NYG: Tynes

TD NE: Brady to Gaffney (Gostkowski kick)

Note that all of that scoring took place in the final two minutes.

3rd Quarter:

TD NE: Brady to Moss (Gostkowski kick)

4th Quarter:

TD NYG: Manning to Toomer (Droughns run failed)

FINAL SCORE

NE 28, NYG 16

MVP: Tom Brady, QB NE: 4 TDs, 0 Interceptions, 149.0 rating.

There were no penalties in the game, and the only turnovers came on two Manning interceptions, who finished with a 65.1 rating.

4 TDs and FG in the final two minutes? Dude please.

I merely report the facts, I don't say that they're remotely plausible in real life. the first Giants touchdown and second NE touchdown came on a total of five plays, if that makes it any better.

I've always liked the Los Angeles Raiders (I had a sweater when I was younger), so much so that I still cheer for Oakland when I catch a game (while everybody laughs at me :( ).

I want to see the Patriots win because I don't really have a lot of investment in NFL football (CFL is real football!), so it wouldn't make me happy to see them lose. It would make me happy to see them set a nice record, though.

Okay, cool. *shrug* After I hit "post", I thought the comment was slightly inappropriate, so I deleted it. Glad no offense was taken, though.

I dunno -- even if the Pats win, I'll bet their cheating means the '72 Dolphins wanking won't end.

On one hand, it would be fun to watch Tom Brady + teammates pour a nice hot cup of Shut The Fuck Up to the 72 Dolphins and their seven or eight remaining fanwhores. The only reason people make such a fuss over that team is because for some jive-ass reason the 1948 Cleveland Browns are ignored and their undefeated season isn't recognized by the NFL. THAT was the greatest team in the history of pro football: TEN STRAIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP GAMES -WINNING SEVEN! So this "record" is not only way overrated, it is in fact a fraud. All the same, the prospect of Mercury Morris hanging himself tomorrow night from the lamp post in a parking lot somewhere in the more remote sections of Dade County warms my heart.

On the other hand, a loss to the Giants would have to be the biggest choke-job in Boston since Albert DiSalvo lurked the streets. I love shit like that. I laughed when an 8-8 Rams team limped into Seattle back in 2004 and beat a Seahawks team that was not only heavily favored to win that round, but was considered a likely SB winner. I also had a good chuckle when the Colts choked at home against the Steelers. The 98 Vikings and 99 Jaguars are also infamous for choking hard against grossly inferior opponents. If the Patriots lose tomorrow, it will be what Waterloo was for Napoleon: never mind all his previous wins, he is remembered more for a big loss.

That said, this game will most likely suck: Patriots 41, Giants 16.
On the bright side, the pre-game show will have Alicia Keyes in concert. Not only is she one of the most beautiful women in the world, but she's one of the few singers who doesn't try to beat you to death with her range as a singer. I have always hated the halftime shows -even more than the production numbers they do at the Oscars. This is football goddamnit! Halftime is when normal people take a shit and get a sandwich and drinks (if necessary).

But if the game should really suck, if the sideshows should also blow like Hurricane Katrina and the whole thing turn into a suckfest beamed down to earth from the USS Suckterprise from the planet Suck with a fucked up transporter that turns everything inside out so it can suck and blow simultaneously, I've still got TCM, a channel that seldom disappoints.

Patriots because I think they are going to ride their winning momentum through to the end and also because I strongly despise the Giants (and all other New York teams) like any Eagle/insert other Philadelphia team fan should. I've no love for the team that isn't named for a city (or even a state), but I hate the Giants more

It may be close, perhaps within a FG, but I say Patriots.

Sweet, my pregame show is Battlestar Galactica, second episode of Exodus. Starship porn, and then Superbowl! YEAH! Citytv for my fellow Canuckistanis.

And Havok, how am I a douche? :?
