Mike, do you know what pop ups are coming up on your site?

There was a banner ad that linked to this:

http://www.hootone.com/hiv/hooimm.asp

I somehow doubt that you support this...

:wtf: Couldn't you have just PM'ed Mike about this?

Pop ups and banner ads are two different things.

Indeed. In any case, he doesn't have any control over the advertisements he displays, I should think.

Google adapts them for the keywords it finds on that particular page. This is nearly older than the Internets, but not quite.

And if I had the power I'd lock this and drop kick one of you over a long distance. Gods damn it.

What the fuck? Couldn't you have just PM'ed Mike about this?
I didn't think it was that serious. I'm not familiar with the protocol regarding pop up ads in regard to personal sites. I assumed people had a choice as tow what was put there.

Are you insinuating that I was trying to stir up shit against him with a veiled innuendo? Christ no! My first thought was "Mike would almost certainly disagree with this highly likely pseudoscience advertisement." .So I just copied it for him assuming he'd want to know.

No. He's insinuating that you really didn't need to make a thread about this (really unimportant subject) in SLAM and could've just PMed Mike. Unless you wanted do debate the inherent scientific methodologies, logical paradoxes, and ethical ramifications of internet advertisement and how it affects human society and spirituality. Gasp! *adjust monocle*

Oy...at least put it in the right place.

Banners? Ads? You guys still tolerate looking at that stuff? I hardly ever see such things anymore. :)

First, banner ads and popup ads are two completely different things. I have no popup ads on my site.

Second, I'm completely aware that ads come up for things I don't necessarily support, and so is everyone else. Are you trying to win some kind of Dr. Obvious Nitwit award?

Hrm. What are the requirements or terms when you want to get Google Ads? 'Cause when you said that the Google Ads basically make SDnet pay for itself, it really caught my attention.

I go to this other forum which is maintained by dudes paying for it out of their own pocket, and it kind of makes me feel like a freeloader (since I'm not financially independent and can't make donations and stuff) - and it'd be really cool if they could use Google Ads to alleviate certain financial burdens.

You need to have a fair bit of traffic. You can't host certain kinds of content, such as promotion of racial hatred or explicit pornography. You can't simultaneously have competing ads on the same page as Google ads. There are some other conditions, but I don't remember them all. In my case, somebody from Google actually contacted me and asked if I would be interested.

Hrm. I don't think that place I go to gets enough traffic, certainly it's nowhere as huge or as busy as SDnet. I'll run it by the dudes though, see if it's possible. If Google doesn't remove its ads even when Shep's posting in SDnet, then I guess we don't have much to worry about

Sorry all. I really never paid attention to the banner ads before, but a lot of them like the engineers motto "keep thy tool rigid", and things like "join the great atheist conspiracy", seemed to be personally sanctioned and so I thought maybe something fell through the cracks.

Those are not ads, you silly little man.

Mang

Those are...his signature picture, mang. His sig rotates between several silly pics (like Haliburton and Danish Dildoes). Those are different from the actual-factual Google advertisement banners at the bottom of this page.

Dude

As some people know, I have an online business. It's actually doing very well, and a chunk of my merchandise tends to be religious crap. I sell it because Christians are probably the easiest group I know of to sell things to... even though I don't support them or their goofball religion.

Just because you sell something doesn't necessarily mean you also endorse it.

Sir, this business venture intrigues me. I'd doff my hat, were I wearing one and within visual distance of you.

I get this sneaking feeling he actually thought he was being helpful.

Maybe I'm just imagining that, though. :P

I thought I was, But I guess I just ended up looking foolish as I didn't look into the nature of the ad in question.

So a moderate slap is very likely warranted. My Bad.

...oh, and in case anyone gets any mistaken ideas about why this was locked, it was swiftly becoming a vulture fest without any forseeable productive outcome, on top of being poorly conceived in the first place.
