an Italian news website is claiming that they have a picture of the cracked wing of the shuttle columbia that was taken prior to it's reentry. take a look for yourself. My Italian is pretty rusty but from what i understand the picture was privided to them by an Israeli news outlet that anylized video of an interview of Ilan Ramon that happend to catch an outside view of the craft.

While my Italian is quite rudimentary, it's said that the image originally is from the Israeli newspaper/magazine Maariv, and that has something to do with a talk between the Israeli astronaut and Sharon...

The crew was not able to take pictures. They didn't have an arm to position a camera. Oh yes, and you cannot see the wings from inside the shuttle.

I don't know about the Israeli one, but the Corriere della Sera is one of the big Italian newspapers.

It could be real, but I doubt it came from the source they indicate:
anylized video of an interview of Ilan Ramon that happend to catch an outside view of the craft.
Video quality from orbit is quite poor, so I find it hard to believe that was the actual source, as any view recorded from inside showing space would probably be a mess if inlarged. Besides, I don't think there are any windows from the habitation area that you can see the wings that clearly. This would most likely have to come from an external camera, in my uneducated opinion.

If they start finding images of the devil's face in the burn-up stream (like they did for the WTC, although most of them looked like kitties to me), I'm going to shoot myself.

That would be a waste. Shoot the Fundie that made the image and kill two birds with one stone!

Except that Fundamentalists aren't usually the ones who make those kind of images (which are usually just taking a picture at the right time and place), it's more from the Lunatic Fringe.

Can we not shoot a Fundie too though for all the "God hates space-travel" rhetoric they'll no doubt spew *cough*Phelps*cough*.

I must say, this image looks pretty crap though.

Why did CNN say that a space shuttle travels 18 times faster than the spped of light? Sometimes they do stupid things.

It's called a "typo".

'Cept us. :P

You gotta admit, it's a fairly stupid and funny typo to make all the same, I assume it was one anyway and not a Photoshop job. You never know.

According to a few experts I've seen on CNN, there wasn't really a way for anyone to know the damage. The only way was to have someone spacewalk out there, and that wasn't going to happen.

If it is a fake, then it is a fake tape, because the video footage of the conversation has been aired on the italian televisions.

There is no place on the shuttle that you can see the wings from the inside. They could not make a space walk to see the wings. The wings are this funky yellow color. It's almost definitely a fake.

Umm...HELLO? Anybody there? If the damage was *that* extensive, do you honestly think they would've tried to land? The landing would've been scrubbed and another shuttle would've been launched to get them off the shuttle.

The left wing WAS damaged on launch, though thats probably a fake.
