I don't really think the Democrats care about what the current administration is doing to civil liberties. If they did, they wouldn't be whining about "tax cuts for the rich". If you want civil liberties back, I'm sure there's some third party that considers it an issue.

This is a law enforcement wish-list, nothing more. Some Justice Department morlocks cooked this up in a conference room somewhere, it got leaked to PBS, and now everyone is screaming Big Bad Johnny Ashcroft is coming to drag them out of their beds at night. Scary if it got passed, but as far as I can see, only Cheney and Hastert have even seen the document. It's got a long, long way to go before it even comes up for a vote on the House floor.

Do you have any proof that document is real? I mean, use your brain for a moment, okay? If it was "Confidential, not for distribution", and someone got ahold of it - And the government was planning to implement THAT - Do you think it would stay up on their website for very long?

I didn't think so.

Remember that PBS, despite, and indeed because of being government funded, is one of the most liberal news sources out there. Ideally, funding for it should be cut to remove the propaganda it spews; I'm not surprised they've put up some idiocy like that.

Looks like a load of made up crap. Its not like it's a photocopy or something. Why the fuck would someone take the time to go back and recreate a supposedly secret document with HTML when they could just have an image or PDF? Could that be because no such document exists with which to copy? I think so.

Actually, there is a .pdf avaiable from pbs.org or here. The document was originally found by the Center for Public Integrity, a nonpartisan public interest group. Also available are documents from the Justice Department regarding who has received this document (Cheney and Hastert, as mentioned earlier in the thread). I believe that it is a real draft, but I don't know if it will ever see the light of day.

Hopefully, if someone tries to push it through Congress there will be enough public outcry to stop it. Lord knows I don't trust the government to act responsibly on this matter.
