To the newly blooded
For those of you who hadn't experienced a flamewar until the weekend, be glad - your introductory battle was a damn good one to be exposed to.
It was petty, personal, virulent, nasty and had about as much abuse as you can get on a moderated board.
To those of you who have been blooded, just how did this one rate on the scale of things?

Wouldnt have been my first flame war....though OP wars are more amusing.....been in a few of them too....when the moderators of something get to battling it gets really messy.
I'll give you my opinion on things once I look over all I've missed....

I consumed six or seven metric tons of popcorn over the course of the flamewar.

I missed it. But considering it got to 6 pages about as fast as a SpaceBattles debate, I am glad I wasn't involved.

This is even worse for us good people away from the relevant time-zones... Only now, 12 hours latter do I see the smoking debris of last night (dawn for me) flame fest.
Wow, this is an interesting month!
A question: Why does this board atract so much loonies like us??????

Missed it. Went home for the weekend, and our 'Net crashed. I hate AOL.

It's my parents account. They've said they'll keep it until my father retires (about 6-7 years), then they're going to move and get a good broadband provider. I don't understand their reasoning, but I'm not about to get into a big argument with them over it right after they've agreed to pay for another year of collegeCoaan wrote:Aohell?!...The Dark wrote:Missed it. I got to watch, and I've seen a lot worse.
Frankly, I think that it was fairly inevitable to have a wolfpack snarling match over, well, anything. I don't know of any community in history that doesn't disagree with itself or suffer a major schism at some point or another.
Ironically, I sent a PM to Mike Wong a bit ago congratulating him on a community that not only managed to appeal to both kids and adults, but establish itself on very diverse terms and incorporate a wide variety of opposing minds without reeking of napalm and spam.
I don't think this is the be-all and end-all of the Board As We Know It, partly because although I don't know him, I believe Mike is far more resilient than that and partly because there will always be long-standing, even-handed regulars like myself here who will put our money where our mouths are to support any kind of heavy-handedness it takes to keep the board a civil place to exchange info and stories.

Note: I'm semi-retired from the board, so if you need something, please be patient.

For the most part, I was not in it. It did slame Ted for being an ass, but it was before he got grounded by Darth Wong. I did, however, get to watch it explode over the OT forum. I was right there when the defending forces rallied and made a counter attack. When the counter attack stalled, the other side reinforced their line and skirmishes broke out all over.
This is a good example of the dangers of alliances. Kelly got attacked (or thought she did, its up to interpitation and I am not on either side) and she and her friends responded. Those friends got slamed for being Kelly henchmen (again, not my opinion but up to interpitation) and they slammed others. And yet more came to the defense of others and it snowballed from there.
I don't think it would have been as bad as it was, if people were not still up in arms about the TED/Zaia thing (Not that Zaia is in anyway to blame) but people were already redfaced with rage and another target announced itself to act as a "pressure release valve". The domino effect was deffenatly in effect this weekend. Hopefully, the release of pent up emotions will lead to a more emotionaly stable mood in the board. Everyone breath deep, hold for a count of ten, and release. Haaaaaaaaa.

They say, "the tree of liberty must be watered with the blood of tyrants and patriots." I suppose it never occurred to them that they are the tyrants, not the patriots. Those weapons are not being used to fight some kind of tyranny; they are bringing them to an event where people are getting together to talk. -Mike Wong
But as far as board culture in general, I do think that young male overaggression is a contributing factor to the general atmosphere of hostility. It's not SOS and the Mess throwing hand grenades all over the forum- Red

Eh. I would rate it more or less smack in the middle of whatever scale we're using.
