SCA as in Society for Creative Anachronisms
Maybe if we're lucky this will get stickied later.
So, I know Rogue9 was at an event this weekend, and my Barony was host to
Æthelmearc Crown Tourney. Anyone else have an event they went to this weekend, or are going to hit soon?
(PS: I find it amusing that my mother is in more pictures than I am, where she was standing on the hillside watching the fights. Look for the mundane lady in a pink sweater. I am best seen during the Court pictures, attending my Baron and Baroness as Onyx Pursuivant. They're waiting for the next local event to give out awards -- made a damn SHORT Court!)

Yes, I was at Rendezvous at the Bridge at Lincoln State Park. If anyone's interested, video of the heavy weapons tourney is
here, and of the melees
here. Follow the video responses to get the rest; they were too long to post in one piece.
This is the blooper reel, which hilariously enough is attracting more views than the event's other videos.
This Saturday I'm going to be at The Odyssey in Spencer, IN, on the off chance that anyone from here is going. I authorized in rapier at Rendezvous, so this will be my first fighting event in about three years.
Oh, and Lady T:

Those are the best kind.
Well, unless it was Duke Bytor's court last time he was crown at Gulf Wars. Because he had a freaking
cannon go off every time we did the "Vivat! Trimaris!" thing.
Now that was a fun court.

I'll be at Gatalop in Mobile, AL, on the weekend of October 24-26. Anyone there can look for me on the fencing field: SCA name Runolfr.
I'll also be at Crystal Ball in St. Louis on the weekend of Nov 8.

Anyone in the Æthelmearc or Eastern Midrealm is welcome to join Nitram and I Nov. 1 for the
Burning of the WickerMan. This is the 5th year we're holding it. There is an unofficial Fencer's Muster being held during the event.

Anybody else? I'll be staying on site at the Drawbridge Inn, and am heading up on Thursday afternoon.

Question for all you SCA types: would it be difficult to make a cheap Roman lorica segmentata-lookalike out of some kind of material like canvas that I could get at a craft store and cut to a pattern? Would it actually look like anything, or would it look like crap? I'm asking because my boys have a Roman legionaire fashion fetish and they want something like that for Halloween next year, and I don't want to get actual metal armour for a kids' Halloween costume for numerous reasons (including cost).

Yes, Mike, you use "Metallic Paint" to make it look real, or just put aluminum foil over card stock.
here you go, a

Most guys doing Lorica use pickle buckets (a stiff white plastic).

I hadn't thought about that, it would be perfect.
but 2 inch strips of cricular material, punch holes at each end and chain it down, still works after 2000 years.

Do they soften it up so they can curve it to the right radius by sticking it in an oven or something? The pieces that go over your shoulders would need a much smaller curvature than the pieces that go around your chest.

well depends on how perminate you want your costume?
Adult plastic cheast pieces are easy to find (goes over the segmentum) online, most one time cosplayers simply use cardboard/chipboard because it's pliable and a little metalic paint you've got a one night roman infantry costume that's cheap and light weight. if your going to be using plastic, then yes heat softens it but you have to watch your application because you don't want to burn, soften too much, or otherwise damage your armour. However the pickle barrel works good for the lower chest and groin pieces, naturally curved tand the curve is about right to make your sandwich halves. For your skirting use plastic card stock at a craft store, and for your shoulder strips use other available plastics that have the right intrensic curve to them.
Still say, buy the adult size chest piece online though.

The problem is that it's not supposed to be an adult chest piece. It's supposed to be sized for a twelve year old.

sorry Thought it was for you at first, childs chest piece is easy enough to get too.

As YB said, the plastic buckets are the right curve for the torso, and surprisingly the shoulders fit with little work as well.

This is a cool idea. I think the boys would get a kick out of this project.

For SCA Armor, the fighters use hammered copper rivets to fasten the plastic bands to leather straps, so the bands lay and move right. Tonight I'll see if I can find the plans for them on the SCA website

Just back from KWAR. Have about six warders in my debt right now for saving them from their own drunken stupidity/passed-out-in-the-hall-ness.
Other than that, it was an absolute blast, and I learned a lot. And before I forget, hoobah to Lady Sibyl for her induction into the Order of the Bronze Ring!
