CNN is reporting that the CIA has confirmed North Korea now has missles capable of striking the United States. yay

I saw the clip where this was reported. The missile has never been tested but still, it is not a good thing.

They've had that untested weapon since the early 1990's. CNN likely missed the 1994 date on the report.

North Korea has not lasted this long be being that stupid.
Hell the most likely reason for all this crap from the DPRK is they don't have a working device, but want to make everyone think they do to buy enough time to complete one. As long as the US cant be sure and cant locate them it cant act against North Korea or its possibul nuclear weapon.

I have been wondering about this lately. What if NK is trying to get our attention to draw us AWAY from Iraq. I mean, they will most likely be the next. Sure, we need to keep a close eye on NK, but we don't need to be distracted from the situation at hand.

*Shrug* China's been able to hit LA with nukes for about a decade now. Quite frankly, Florida doesn't seem so bad when that thought pops into my head. At least Disney's not a big enough target to waste a nuke on, assuming enemies had the range for it.

It'd be nice to see these annoying Disney characters get fried in microwave radiation from a 25 MT bomb..

By East coast, they mean Alaska . They don't have anything that can reach the lower 48.

Well there was the feared threat of Cuba nuclear power plant, though of course work stopped about 10 years ago when it was nowhere near complete. US is still evidently paying 7 million dollars a year to maintain a series of radiation detectors along the coast in case it ever melts down.

Miami is very worth a nuke though.

Nukes dont release microwave radiation. They release thermal radiation (heat), alpha beta and gamma particles, and some others.

Bah, for real isolation from nuclear attack I'd go to Idaho. I mean, seriously, you never hear about Idaho in the news. There aren't (IIRC) any nuke silos in Idaho, nor major population centers.

Really? I'd think the hurricanes would be a little worrisome.

Well, I've been in Orlando for almost 20 years. In that time, we've been hit semi-directly by one tropical storm and brushed by three hurricanes (IIRC). Most of them swing around. That one that stalled off North Carolina did more damage to them than anything around here. Only Andrew did more damage AFAIK, and that was mostly centered on Miami.

Some neutron radiation as well, though that’s normally sucked up by the second stage of a thermonuclear bomb. It when you don't have this yield boosting second stage, and just release the big mass of neutrons that you get an Enhanced Radiation Device, or neutron bomb. There's a bit more too it, but that’s the basic idea.

You also live in Central Florida. We here on the coast (Tampa Bay area here) have a lot more to fear from hurricanes, though things like tropical storms aren't too much of a worry (hell, they didn't even cancel school when we got sideswiped)

True, Orlando's fairly well protected. Even Lakeland didn't get hit hard by that last one, and it's only about 50 miles inland. I walked around a local lake during the storm, and got roughly 1.5 miles between the time the first arm passed and the second arm hit. It was basically a big windy thunderstorm by the time it got there. Tampa, Pensacola, Miami, and the Keys are all vulnerable.
