Lighting Rifle?

Well from what I understand about lighting is that a lighting bolt is a stream of postive ions travling along a stream of negtive ions right?
If that's the case then would it be posable to make a lighting gun that shoots a stream of negtive ions then a nano-second later have a stream of postive ions fallow the path of the negtive ions to the target?

I belive there are already tasers that work like that.

No tazers send a jolt down a thin metal wire that hooked up to some darts that are fired into a target

There are a few on the market that use a focused ion beam (or some such thing) that bring people down.

They can also blow out light globes if aimed at them.

That's what I'm thinking of. They don't use wires, as those are a major handicap and the barbs on the ends could get stuck in flesh and tear it.

Nice. Maybe we'll have full particle guns working on the same or similar principle in the future. :)

And phasers!

Those don't work on the same principle discussed here. :D

I had an idea once for a weapon like that. At a very high velocity, shoot liquidfied conductive metal in a very thin stream, and then electrify the stream with hella juice, and voila, reach out and touch someone.

Whether or not this is feasible, much less possible, is beyond me though.

you just need liquid with Electrolytes

Gaterade or Urine would conduct electricity in such a manner No Problem.

The type of taser you're thinking of uses two UV lasers to produce two parallel channels of ionized oxygen. The ionized oxygen is used to complete a circuit between the taser and the target.

The British Army was experimenting with ion beam taser "lightning" guns for anti-protestor service or even for field usage. Don't know what happened to the project though.

I wondered what a "lighting" gun was. :P

I had this idea a while back when I say a news story about researchers in Japan using lasers to direct lightning bolts. Good to hear a gov is actually working on it.

There was some talk about making a tazer that used a laser beam to carry the stuff to the target or something.

You need a conductor. Electricity always takes the path of least resistance to ground; if you simply launch electrons out of a gun, they'll just scoot to the ground instead of travelling in a straight line.

The idea behind the lasers is to use some kind of high-frequency laser to ionize twin paths of air to the target, thus providing ad hoc conductors through which the electricity will flow.

Are there any working laser tasers on the market yet? ive not seen any and I would think they would be common knowledge and commonly used.

Not that I know of.
