Who caught tonight's showing of Matthew Broderick as The Music Man? He sucked at first, but after the Marion the Librarian song, I kind of began to like him. But Robert Preston did it far better. He was the real con man.

I didn't watch MusicMan tonight, but I agree that Robert Preston was the man.
He was great in Victor/Victoria, and did you ever see S.O.B.?

Unfortunately I've only seen two movies with Preston, The Music Man and the Last Starfighter. He was excellent in both. though.

Yeah, he's great.
I'd only suggest SOB if you're a fan of Blake Edwards' movies, but Victor/Victoria is great and RP is awesome in it.

Yeah, sorry, but I just abolutely hate musicals.
The only ones I like are
My Fair Lady and
Little Shop of Horrors (1980s version).

Have you ever seen
Into the Woods, by Stephen Sondheim? I'm not a big musical fan myself, but I liked this one enough to buy the video.
from the box:
...a seemless fusion of fairy tales that strikes at the child's heart within us all. A baker and his wife journey into the woods in search of a cow, a red cape, a pair of golden slippers and some magic beans - all necessary to lift the curse that has kept them childless...
OK, it's better than that, but it's a very interesting blending of fairy tales that is humorous while still keeping the dark edge that the original Grimm tales have. And it's not a pure musical; there are a lot of songs of course, but it's not all singing, by any means.

into the woods - one of the few musicals I watch voluntarily.

Go rent Victor/Victoria, its well worth it
For me Robert Preston is the one and only Music Man, I saw no reason at all to have Matthew Broderick(Who is a fine actor and musical theatre performer) do this remake, the Preston version is perfect as is.

I'd have to agree with Spanky on this one. I don't like musicals much. I do like
My Fair Lady but most musicals of that style are either annoying or boring. Considering all the crap about Iowa in the begining of
The Music Man it was extremely annoying. A lot of the problems I have with musicals, especially those that started as plays, is the music and perhaps the singing style.
The Music Man has some good music but unfortunately it isn't at the begining. Man was that "song" on the train annoying.
I was visiting my parents so not only did I stop watching it I drove for 20minutes to get home. Then I watched the Simpsons.

Actually, in this version, that song was a serious forte for the movie. Patrick McKenna is hillarious. He is a very good actor, even if he's not playing the dorky Harold Green that got him famous. As far as I'm concerned, Red Green is Canada's greatest contribution to the world, combining with Jim Carrey to finally redeem that country from the likes of Celine Dion and Brian Adams.
