[brainless moron mode] ....but, but, but ... he sings songs and is popular ... heck, he's even on
MTV, so he's gotta be great. You're just mad, because he's so smart and popular, and you wish you were![/brainless moron mode]

Since when has being a spokesman for very vague concepts (and no concrete ideas) and generaly doing nothing but saying your going to do something, been a runner for "Peace Prize"?

It seems all awards today are based on popularity...

The Nobel Peace prize became irrelevant when Jimmy Carter won it...

Though they start to get meaningless with the sheer volume of them increasing so much.....

Actually didn't a category get retired because it kept happening to much?

In fairness to Bono he does do a lot of work behind the scenes for things that you never hear about. He is genuinely into what he does outside his singing. But OTOH there are many more deserving people. I do defend Bono because he was my childhood hero, or one of them anyway.

The Nobel Peace Prize became irrelevant when Mother Teresa was awarded it.

Keep in mind who Nobel Prices have been given to in the past, Inculding Churchill and Gandi
Compared to who won it last time around(Carter-The amazing peacenick President! Not once during his entire admistration did he take a stand on anything to do with the military besides cutting our pay!)
Nevermind the Nobel people out and out admited they gave it to Carter as a Political Statment....

Of course, the irony of the Nobel peace prize is that Nobel created it in order to cover up his legacy, since he was an enormously successful arms dealer (where do you think he got all his money?), not to mention the man who invented dynamite. In his day, he was known as the "Merchant of Death".

Acutal not quite Wong, I caught this today as a matter of fact on the History Channel where they read his will and noted the fact the only thing Nobel every gave to the Nobel awards was his name and his money, He said in his will only to "set up a fund to help reward and recongize those who better mankind"
The who's and hows where left compeltly up to his exectotrs

Oh BTW:
Excerpt from the Will of Alfred Nobel wrote:
"The whole of my remaining realizable estate shall be dealt with in the following way:
The capital, invested in safe securities by my executors, shall constitute a fund, the interest on which shall be annually distributed in the form of prizes to those who, during the preceding year, shall have conferred the greatest benefit on mankind.
The said interest shall be divided into five equal parts, which shall be apportioned as follows:
One part to the person who shall have made the most important discovery or invention within the field of physics
One part to the person who shall have made the most important chemical discovery or improvement
One part to the person who shall have made the most important discovery within the domain of physiology or medicine
One part to the person who shall have produced in the field of literature the most outstanding work in an ideal direction
And one part to the person who shall have done the most or the best work for fraternity between nations, for the abolition or reduction of standing armies and for the holding and promotion of peace congresses.
The prizes for physics and chemistry shall be awarded by the Swedish Academy of Sciences
That for physiology or medical works by the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm
That for literature by the Academy in Stockholm
And that for champions of peace by a committee of five persons to be elected by the Norwegian Storting.
It is my express wish that in awarding the prizes no consideration be given to the nationality of the candidates, but that the most worthy shall receive the prize, whether he be Scandinavian or not."

Because of his work in raising awareness of both AIDS and the Northern Ireland situation throughout he 80s and early 90s.

So it was for Warchilde and AIDs awareness, sounds fair then.
Although I found it kinda embarrassing when Warchilde gave money to a charity that was just a front for Sinn Faen.

Note to set the Record Stright.
Bono set up a Charity that funneled a great deal of U2's profits into many good Charityies. Unfortunatly, a group of "Con Men" set up a non-profit organization that was supposed to be there to help people in Northern Ireland. Infact 90% of the money went straight to the people that were making things WORSE in N.I. When Bono found out, he publicly outed the false charity, and demanded several million back, that had been given to them under false pretenses.
The Warchild(e) charity continues to provide assistance and awareness of AIDs and to promote Peace and economic development in Northern Ireland
