The Daily Show sucks

The Daily Show has flirted with leftist anti-gun politics before, but crossed the line tonight, in my opinion.

They ran a story on a New Yorker who, in response to a ridiculous proposed New York City law that would make it illegal to sell or own any toy guy that could be perceived to be a gun, started a program to distribute water pistols and cap guns to Manhattan kids. They made him seem like he was some asshole who was trying to force his gun-nut agenda on innocent inner city children and made the safety Nazi prick who wanted to ban harmless objects (on the basis that every once and a while, someone will paint a toy gun black and pretend it is a real gun) out to be some kind of hero.

PC garbage aside, what the hell? Some of my fondest childhood memories (and I'm sure those of many others) come from days when I would have water pistol fights with my friends. And now some safety Nazi comes along, decides that water pistols are a horrible danger to the youth of New York City (you'd think he might want to concern himself with something like, I don't know, GANG WARFARE) and somehow comes off as the rational person. People who believe children should be allowed to play with harmless, albeit un-PC toys come off as horrible demons who want to kill inner city children.

Fuck the Daily Show, fuck Jon Stewart. I don't care how funny it is, I'm never watching it again.

Oh, give me a fucking break. They made fun of a guy who thinks he's toy-gun Robin Hood. If you can't see the humour in that, that's your problem. Sure, the law is stupid, but so is this ridiculous campaign. They make fun of both sides on most issues; if you don't have a sense of humour, don't whine about it.

You do realize that the Daily Show is a fucking satirical news show, don't you?

Oh, puh-lease. All you've demonstrated here is that you can laugh when they make fun of somebody else's pet issue, but not yours.

They made fun of the guy because he's a fucking moron. He wanted to distribute toy guns to school children outside of their school in the middle of Harlem. He deserves every piece of ridicule he gets.

So distributing toy guns in an area that isn't exactly known for gun safety regulations couldn't be considered, oh, I dunno, fucking stupid?
Fuck the Daily Show, fuck Jon Stewart. I don't care how funny it is, I'm never watching it again.
Whatever, fucknut. They make fun of everyone. I kept watching even after Stewart revealed that he was a religious bigot with his comments after the whole Pledge of Allegiance controversy hit.

Well, they certainly didn't make fun of both sides on this issue. I will concede that toy gun Robin Hood was an easy (and probably deserving) target for mockery, but it would have been nice to actually see a satirical news show question the logic behind banning plastic guns rather than just painting one side of the issue as being moronic and careless.

Well, who do think is a more suitable target for satire; some dickhead who, on the basis of a few incidents, wants to make ownership of toy guns flat-out illegal, or a mostly harmless moron who thinks kids who want to play with toy guns ought to be allowed to? It's not so much the fact that they made fun of toy gun Robin Hood that bothered me, it's the fact that it wasn't accompanied by at least some jibes at the other side.

Well, maybe I am overreacting a little bit, and I realize that the Daily Show isn't a serious news program, I just thought it acted a little bit ridiculous tonight. I just don't get why The Daily Show felt that a nutcase who wanted to ban toy guns was not a valid target for mockery.

Yeah, let's all stop watching the show because they said something we didn't like.

Clearly not a particularly wise course of action, but banning toy guns is certainly of equal or greater idiocy.

It's consistent with their method. They usually don't go after the heart of an issue; that is for serious journalism (not that I know where to go for this mythical beast known as serious journalism, but that's another issue). Instead, the Daily Show always goes after weirdoes on the fringe of any particular issue, and in this case, it was toy-gun Robin Hood. I think you're just overreacting and will recognize this when you've had time to cool down.

OK, so I really overreacted. I probably won't stop watching it.

That reminds me of the time they interviewed a lady that felt discriminated against because she couldn't smoke anywhere she wanted.

Who cares? The Daily Show doesn't elevate one position over any other; they just make fun of whoever is dumber by pretending to support them and cast the opposition as some sort of evil foe. Why? Because it's fucking funny!

Or when they cast gun owners who wanted to keep a shooting range next to a country club as an "endangered species." Stephen Colbert is a fucking genius.

Indeed, toy-gun Robin Hood is a weirdo on the fringe, but safety-Nazi isn't? Not to mention this (safety-nazi) guy made a public spectacle of himself, when, while attempting to demonstrate at a press conference how dangerous a black-painted water gun could be, screwed up and spilled water all over his pants. That, to me, is more funny than some idiot who gives fake guns to kids.

The guy was handing them out in Harlem on a school day right after school to all the school-children. It's such a preposterously ill-considered and hilarious thing to do that it demands to be made fun of ruthlessly. No, I think that's funnier than safety-Nazis any day of the week. You can't make up stupidity like that.

And I do agree with you, I'm just pissed off because I got the vibe that the Daily Show writers actually felt that banning toy guns was a perfectly reasonable policy.

Don't watch too much; you might get the impression that The Daily Show's writers think that George W. Bush is a moron.

Well, that much is obvious, but the difference is they're at least partially correct on this matter.

That's right. "I don't like his policies so he must be stupid, my logic is flawless"

If my boys were awake, I would snap a digital snapshot of them holding various items from their vast toy gun collection and post it here, just for fun.

Yep, just so you can have the peace of mind while being mugged that it's a real weapon pointed at your head and not some harmless waterpistol. :)

He basically said that we're trying to oppress religious people, which is the standard idiot bullshit misinterpretation of the wall of separation (talk to Falcon if you want this worldview expanded upon in great detail, with incredible repetition).

They did that in Spider-Man before.
