Your computer must be a serious POS if DX9 blew it up, I just converted all of my LAN systems to it and I'm not having any problems, in fact if anything I've gotten about a 25% increase in game performance with no negative effects on the OS performance... Of course I am running Win2k Pro...
BTW Shep, if you do go with 2K (which is a smart move, it's the only good OS micro$hit has put out to date), DO NOT install any service packs other than SP2, SP3 has a lot of new holes in it and even integrated the tracking crap that XP has, SP3 is also rather unstable as I've found out in the past, but SP2 ran stable as a rock with no problems for 13 months before I decided to reload as a pre-emptive measure (one I'm still regretting).

Can't. I have a Slipstreamed SP3 CD. But this SP3 pack made
the biggest PoS I have ever owned WORK with no BSODs......an
unheard of feat when running Win 98SE on that computer....

I have a friend who had trouble with his brother fucking up his computer and then his computer literate mom making it worse when she tried to help fix it. His solution was to disconnect the monitor to tower cable and bring it with him to school every day. Nothing else would stop them.

This is the same brother who is the incarnation of the Sin "Sloth"
The same brother who destroys CDS by brushing his teeth at the computer..
Mark you shouldn't trust some one who burnt out their brain on Something Awful years ago.

You need to have separate computers.

Do comps nowdays still have that key and lock that locks the hard drive or something?

Good idea. Hey Shep, I have an old Packard Bell with a 486 and a 15" monitor I'll sell you. $$$

I haven't seen one on a recent computer. Software driven security should work for what Sheppard needs however.

Dual-boot with XOSL and two primary partitions. Total OS segregation.

I have two, one for access to the floppy drive, CD drive, and power button; and the other locks the whole tower.

Slipstreaming means that SP3 has been integrated into the install CD.
I currently use W2K SP3 on a few machines @ home and it works fine.

You can get them, though they aren't common anymore. BIOS locking it should work, OTOH.

How do you do that?
I really wanna keep my mother from screwing with my stuff, though having two users on XP Pro still aint protecting my shit.

That's easy. Partition half your HD for FAT32 and Win98. Then, install software like Partition Magic to make a second PRIMARY partition in the remaining half of the drive. Use FDISK or some other utility to make the second partition active: this will make it think that it's C: and the first partition is D:.
Now, install Win XP Pro on C:. You can switch between the two partitions by simply changing the active partition (can be done with a simple batch file if you have Partition Magic's command-line utility or handled with a boot-sector menu by XOSL). Each OS will think it's on C:. XP Pro will be able to see the Win98 partition as D: but Win98 won't be able to see XP Pro because Win98 can't see NTFS, so you'll be secured.

Go biometric. Admin your account and limit her account while using a thumb scanner so noone can use the admin account. If that dosen't stop her than, nothing will. Also xp is crap. One admin can delete another admins password
