Child sues teacher over 'taping'
A schoolteacher in the US state of Missouri is facing a lawsuit that alleges she taped a kindergarten child to a chair as a punishment.
The family of the child, who has not been named, is seeking $25,000 for psychological damage and violation of the child's right to liberty.
The teacher, De Mara Lashley, was suspended last week along with another teacher and the school principal, Rick Mills, for using inappropriate disciplinary measures.
The Kansas City school district that employs them is reportedly investigating allegations that children were threatened with a glue gun, had their hands bound and had pepper put in their mouths.
Mr Mills has said that punishments at the school were consistent with district regulations.
He said children were disciplined by being made to stand in a corner with their hands behind their backs.
The lawsuit alleges that the plaintiff and another child were taped to their chairs and that other children were verbally threatened on 5 February.
Only one child's family is suing. The teacher - not the school or the district - is the only one named in the suit.
Two teachers at the school, Pitcher Elementary School, were disciplined last year for strip-searching 23 eight- and nine-year-olds in a hunt for $5 in stolen lunch money.
Emphasis mine.
WTF is wrong with these people?

I'm not arguing for those assholes, but where in the hell do the parents get "right to liberty" from?

Fucked up, if it is true. While I'm sure there are people who would do it, with much of this likely based off allegations from the same eight and nine year olds, I'm not that willing to believe it. Its just too easy to lead people that young and there too prone to lying.
There have been quite a few cases of false claims of sexual abuse by people this young.

Strip-searches for a $5 in lunch money, and a teacher taping kids to chairs? I probably went to the schools with the sane teachers.

That's nothing. In a school here a few years ago, a teacher forced a student to strip in a sex ed class, threatening to flunk him if he didn't do it.
So, he stripped (he was about 11, btw,) and the teacher pointed out all of his sexual organs with her hands while caressing him. Now that is some sick shit.
This stuff just makes me wanna throttle the sicko who do this.
And she did that in front of a class of 23 11 and 12 year olds.
Couple days later, she raped the same kid and killed him.

That's going too far. But speaking of which, I think America could use some form of corporal punishment in its education system.
We're ranked somewhere above Uganda I believe. Look at how Japan and Korea push their students, it's amazing. Kids will oftentimes trudge miles to school through sub-zero temperature in the snow. If a kid misbehaves it could be a swatting or other form of numbing punishment.
But then again, the quality of teachers is also different. To be a teacher over there you have to actually be pretty smart and go through rigorous examinations and training.
I don't know, I just think our education and youths have fallen apart when we put an emphasis on making sure everyone feels good as opposed to doing whats right and striving hard for what they want.

In Taiwan, teachers are very highly paid and highly respected. They are also among the best academic performers, because the entrance requirements are brutal and the best and brightest try to get in because it's such a good job.
That's how you improve teacher quality, not by clever focus groups or motivational experts or "new guidelines". Mind you, it would not sit well with the existing system, where the teachers want more money but would never accept lofty academic expectations or brutal entrance requirements to teachers' college.

Education majors are the weakest on campus.

Well, I think it's kind of akin to the military these days.. unless we can change the type of people who want to become teachers, the pay, and the respect.. it'll be hard to overall improve the level of education. Education is not about the walls, the technology, or child psychologists, it's about the teachers and mentors and the role they play in their students lives.

I'm in Tiffin. This happened about 5, maybe 7 years ago.
I remember it because I was on the jury that convicted the SOB.

Death is too good. Putting her in a mens' prison would be more suiting.

They do. She got life in prison. And she deserves it. Turns out she was shuffled around like priests were from parish to parish when they were discovered to abuse someone. We dug up a bunch of old files and found out she had raped 3 boys and one girl, and had molested 50 or more young students. I shiver everytime I think of that case.

A woman raping a 11yr old boy? That's something I never heard before and something I wouldn't expect to happen (not because she's a woman). Did she use a weapon?

Held a knife to his throat while she did it.
Then she slit it after she was done.

Compare this to the United States. Back when I was in college, I knew education majors. Education is the degree people seek when they're not quite bright enough for an MBA, but don't want to major in something like underwater basket-weaving.
As a result, you tend to end up graduating a lot of people who don't really know what they're doing. Sure, there are some good ones who are genuinely good and honestly care, but the quality control here sucks.

I'm planning to teach while working on a masters. God my students are going to hate me. Of course I plan on being a better teacher than the ones I had.

Ours are actually fairly good, but they're mostly PK-P, and quite good people. Our communications majors, OTOH...they need a few more ethics courses. They've falsely attributed quotes to my boss (she was so fed up with it, she kept an open intercom channel to the desk I was at, and I took notes on everything that was said). They've done it to sports coaches too, and been nailed on it. And yet they still keep doing it...*sigh*
