Race Based Scholarships

Do you agree with purely race based scholarships and quotas in colleges?
(You have to be of a minority to recieve the scholarship or you are rejected from a college because you are white while there must be a certain amount of minorities, and those spots have yet to be filled.)
I find it wrong. I believe that you should be judged on academic capability alone. They should never ask if you are black/white/asian/native american/ etc. You go to college if you are able to cut it, not if you are of a certain race. There are people in my school that are getting a full scholarship just because they retained a 2.5 GPA in high school and are of a minority.

Do not get me fucking started on this. Race-based quotas are blatantly unConstitutional, under Article XIV, which states in part:
No State shall make or enforce any law which shall abridge the privileges or immunities of citizens of the United States; nor shall any State deprive any person of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws.
Quotas are an unequal protection of the law, thus violating that amendment.

The 2.5 GPA I don't mind giving someone a scholarship to, IF they deserved it. For instance, they showed incredibly marked improvement, held like three or four jobs to support their family, or got a 1600 on their SAT. But just based on race is complete horse-puckey.

As a member of a minority group known for unusually HIGH marks, this is not a personal issue for me and neither I or my kids would ever stand to benefit from such a thing.
But I can understand the motivations behind it; young black kids don't seem to think they can succeed in academics because they see the system as being set against them, and often turn to sports or entertainment as their hopes for success in life. A targeted scholarship may offend some of the oh-so-underprivileged and woefully oppressed white people of America
, but as long as the kid DOES have the requisite marks to get in, the notion of the scholarship does make some sense; it generates perceived incentive.

Yes I am against race based scholarships. I am against them is because someone no matter how hard they try, they are not going to get race based scholarship.

Independently offered race-based scholarships I have no problem with. If the NAACP wants to offer blacks scholarships, and the KKK can offer whites scholarships, I got no beef. If the government gets involved, that's when someone needs to call in the Supreme Court.
(and yes, I did pick the KKK on purpose...they're the organizationas diametrically opposite in beliefs and similar in tactics to the NAACP that I could find in a quick look).

So? There are lots of kids who, no matter how hard they try, will never get into a good university because their parents can't afford it. That's what scholarships are for, and the racial problem in the United States is a societal issue that still needs work, despite all the claims of the self-deluded naysayers who say it's ancient history.

Question: If someone's from Russia, do they count as Asian? Russia's on the Asian side of the Eurasian supercontinent. Or is it just "ethnic" Asians, in which case Oriental might be a more proper term (except that it would piss off the PCs)?

Race based, nah its stupid and should end NOW. A better way to do it would be to give out poor based scholorships. This would accomplish what the race baiters always say they want and it will not be racist in of itself.

Actually, that's true. Studies have shown economic status matters more than race overall.
My belief is that instead of race-based scholarships, that money should go towards improving primary and secondary education at inner-city schools. Those students are traditionally the most likely to not get into college, and are the ones who need the most help. Then again, I'm just an (upper) teenage religion and economics major...what do I know about education other than the fact that I've been in the system for 16 years?

Agreed. I like how graduate level schools base their admissions on, not that its really practical for the tens of thousands that undergraduate admissions receives. But graduate schools look for improvement, types of classes taken, experience, publications and other mitigating circumstances such as economy, family, and such. That's the way to do things.

Who's going to ante up to pay for this? What good teachers are going to want to teach in inner-city schools? Vouchers? That's how suburban parents who drop their kids off every morning pool their finances to build superior schools for their precious little ones.

That's a rather silly point to make when
anyone with a post-secondary education can rattle off a similar or superior term of service in the system.

If they really wanted to they could get their grades up and get a scholarship that way. Or they could have kept their grades at passing and joined a sport and work hard there to get a scholarship. Track/x-country is basically a scholarship handout. You don't even have to be the best at it if you keep your grades up. Don't tell me that it was the only way they could've get get into a college as my parents wouldn't have been able to get me into a college if I didn't work for it on my own. Is it fair that I have to work 4 times as hard as someone else who gets a scholarship just because he/her was born that way?

True, and when they're forced to bus in students, their little ones get sent to private schools. God, I remember when our orchestra conductor was leaving one of the richer parents offerend 'bonuses' and a place to stay if he would stay.. and when he didn't stay the boy was encouraged to graduate early and leave the school.

Damn straight there is something wrong with that. I'm working my ass off now to win a scholarship in art. Luckily there I don't have to worry about anything. But A. I don't like handouts, and B. I don't like watching halfwit asshats receive something for nothing, especially for something I don't believe in.

It shouldn't be a moral program. Rather, if you want to succed then the means to do it are available. There are alot of poor in this country and not all of them are black. The system is set against poor and if black kids want to view that as a racial thing, they are buying into a illusion of race which is every bit as bad as those on the other side of the race issue. Racism exists, but in the schools where these supposed kids attend I doubt that there are a bunch of white kids standing there to oppress them.

Sports scholarships should be abolished completely.

An asthmatic with no sports ability could make the same complaint about those athletic scholarships, and with even more legitimacy since the notion of handing out scholarships solely for athletic ability pisses all over the entire concept of scholarship.

That is VERY damn true. The poor that do succeed often kick ass in college. A lot of them are those 4.0 bastards you want to beat up.
