Question: is it true that you can buy ammunition from Wal-Mart? I saw it on films and heard about it, but I have to ask.

Yep. They don't retail online because of shipping issues but most Wal Marts (ammunition shortage aside) you can walk in and purchase pistol, rifle, and shotgun ammo. I buy winchester 100 round white box all the time for the range since its cheap.

In the US ammunition is a relatively unrestricted commodity. You can buy it pretty much anyplace that has a sporting goods department. And yes, aside from a few states you can walk in and buy a shotgun or rifle, ammunition for it and walk out all in under the space of 30 minutes if not less.

Yep, you sure can. Guns, too - subject to all pertinent national and local regulations, of course. Also, K-mart, Target.... lots of stores sell ammo in areas where guns are legal and especially where hunting is a traditional sport/past-time. I will note, however, that such items (along with hunting knives and such) are kept in locked cases in the stores, at least around here. Wouldn't want anyone to shop lift that sort of thing, would we?

Wow... I thought that the X-files writers (where I first saw this) were just exaggerating or using a plothole. And this is the same retail chain that views selling anything rated 18 as porn?

Not all Wall-Marts sell guns even if all of them sell ammunition. Unless your in a rual area guns will be limited to Black powder ones or even just crossbows. One Wall-Mart I visited in Indiana for example had about twice the selection in that picture of Commander 598. Rare to find a Wall-Mart that sells handguns however. Nearly all the weapons are geared towards hunters so lots of .22's and the occasional .303 style plus a selection of shotguns. You can't exactly stroll into a Wall-Mart and pick up a Kalashnikov with your 5$ ten pack of socks.

It's the same in Canada as well, as far as I can remember. Wal-Mart and even Canadian Tire sold rifles/shotguns/ammo. In the sporting goods section.

Canadian Tire and Wal*Mart here have stopped stocking firearms and only carry the most common types of ammo; .22lr, 12 Gauge buckshot/slugs, .308 etc.

I haven't been in one in years that had any guns, other then air guns. And I live in a community where hunting is extremely common.

Really. Three years ago they were still selling firearms and bows. When and why did they stop?

I'm not sure when they stopped, within the last couple of years anyways. It might depend on what region, they seem to have stopped here in Ontario, still sell bows though.

As for why, I haven't a clue.

Edit: Going by their websites, they don't have them available at all (I had thought maybe you could order them in at the store).

To me, it's weird thinking of any store NOT selling ammo/guns in their SportingGoods section. I'm just so used to seeing them there.

However, as noted, these chains only sell rifles and shotguns, ie Hunting weapons. If you want the semi-autos, you go to a dedicated gun shop or a gun show, and (in theory) pass the Legal Requirements and the 3-day waiting period.

I say 'in theory' because there's been a crack-down on gun-runners from NY and Chicago. They come here via the Interstates and make locals buy the guns, then sell them for huge profit to the City gangs. The link was found years back when a gun used to kill a NY cop was traced back to a WV gun store.

Shocking! Wal Mart actually sells something that's made in the USA? What is this world coming to?

I heard a year or two ago that they were scaling back on the guns sold in stores except for the most heavy gun selling areas.

That makes sense, I doubt the average store sold that many to begin with. Certainly Wal*Mart would not be my first choice when I go to buy a firearm.

That's because they haven't yet made the deal with the Chinese concern who make the cheap plastic caskets.

Around here, ammo has been in short supply at Wal-Marts and the only guns they sell are generally black powder rifles. There's one Wal-Mart I can think of within reasonable driving distance from me that sells guns.

Like Tev, I've come to expect any decent store with a sporting goods section to have guns and ammo. It actually bugs me when they don't! ;)

I don't think they ever did. In 2006 I worked at a Canadian Tire here in Edmonton, and the only guns they sold were the air rifles and pistols (air soft and BB guns). They sold a full selection of ammunition, though, although I think they have scaled the selection down recently.

They do sell the bows, though.

For me it seems so strange that you can just walk into shop and buy firearms and ammo. Here you need a special permit to own a gun. To get it you have to attend training courses and pass exams (comparable to getting a drivers license). If you have done a crime in the past - better forget about owning a gun. When buying an ammo you are allowed to buy only type that your gun uses.
Getting a concealed carry permit is much more difficult, if you are not working in security business there must be good reason why you need it like being threatened or such otherwise no concealed carry permit to you.

For pneumatic guns with more than 12 Joules muzzle energy basically the same rules apply.

Don't compare it to getting a driver's license. Those are a joke over here in the US and Canada. Europe has real standards, as far as I know.

Canada has similar restrictions on firearms, you have to have a license. There are two kinds, a POL, which is Possession and Ownership License, which allows you to possess a firearm, and a PAL, which is Possession and Acquisition, which allows you to buy more firearms. No concealed carry, though, as far as I know.

Yeah, no AK, but the WalMart I normally shop at you can get a Mini-14 for less than $300 and the .223 is moderately inexpensive...

Every single time I go to Wal-Mart they're out of .308! RARGH!

If you think finding guns in Walmart is wierd, wait until you find out whoe else shops at Walmart.

PS: I'm moderately pleased by where the license plate says they're from.

I do remember over here when the British Asda chain of supermarkets were bought over by Wal-Mart, there was a small scale campaign organised by some of the relatives of victims of the Dunblane shootings to have a boycott of Asda, just because the parent company sold ammo in their stores, even though there was no such comparison, and never has been in the UK stores.
